There use to be more wild 'Springers' (King salmon) on the west coast.

We had a run of "Springers" on the Sacramento River in February.

Anglers would anchor their boats around the town of Freeport, California.

They use sardine filets for bait.

My friend Al Perryman use to fish Springers on the Rogue River.

They used cured salmon roe to "back bounce" for these silver bright fish.

They have been working on the runs of wild 'Springers' on Mill Creek, Deer Creek and Butte Creek, tributaries of the Sacramento River.

Looking at the Sacramento spring run report - does the term ”too little too late” occur to anyone else?

the National Marine Fisheries Service this week found the tribe’s request “may be warranted.”

The federal agency will now begin a 12-month review before making a final decision on the tribe’s requests.

“We have known all along that fall Chinook and spring Chinook, or ishyaat, are a distinct species,” Karuk Tribe Natural Resources Director Leaf Hillman said in a statement this week. “We need western science to catch up to traditional wisdom if we are to make the policy changes necessary to save this part of our culture.”

DERP. More NMFS ineptitude. I have all but lost faith in the (mis)management of our fisheries.

In my 50 years of working in the fishing tackle business in Sacramento I always wondered why the CA D F & G did not consult with the local tackle shops, local guides and extremely serious anglers about any of our local fisheries?

For some time now a friend of mine with the CA DFW has been working on the Spring run salmon on Mill Creek, Butte Creek and Deer Creek.

Sadly, the Spring run King salmon are the best for eating of all the fish that enter the Pacific Northwest rivers.
