In the Spring, 2018 edition of the "Flyfishing & Tying Journal,"
Greg Vinci has an article - "Mammoth Lakes-California's Trout Town."
As always, quite informative and a good read.
Best to all,

Many years ago in Sacramento we heard tales of fly fishing down Hwy 395 from people who moved up this way from Southern Cal.

Going north to all our trout rivers back then was so good most never went south from here.

Now with the degradation of our trout fisheries to the north many are going south now.

During the bad drought years of 2013-2015 I would often go down to the Mammoth area and hike into some of the high elevation lakes off 395. Most of the tail waters and freestones in the North and greater Tahoe basin were off limits due to low flows and warm temps. In a weird way the drought got me to explore waters I would have never seen in that neck. You meet very few people from norcal in that region. Almost everybody I ran into was from Scal.

@cdevine,
Mammoth Lakes is a 7 hour drive for Sun Diego. We fish Crowley and later on the Upper Owens for
the migrants. Used to do a lot of backpacking trips on the western side in the 70's.
Young and dumb, I guess. Crowley is an incredible fishery. So many waters, so little time!
Best to you,
