My brother Dick and I headed up to Pyramid Lake in my 1970 VW Bug on Saturday.
On the way up a storm was coming in but we got up there before it hit.
This was before ladders or graphite fly rods and we wore Seal-Dri pure latex stocking foot waders.
We used 9' #9, 2 piece Fenwick fiberglass fly rods with a big Pflueger Medalist fly reels.
We used 25 feet of coated lead core line for a very fast sinking shooting head.
The fastest sinking 30 foot factory head then was a type III / HiD.
We used a short heavy leader with two flies. One was a big black woolly worm and a small white woolly worm.
This was pre-Woolly Bugger too.
It got very black with lots of wind and some rain.
There were maybe thirty people scattered out in a 100 yards or so wading and casting.
The waves almost went over the top of my waders and I had to jump up each time to avoid it.
We noticed that many anglers were walking back in to the shallows with a friend helping them land big fish.
We hooked some too which ran from about 7 to 13 pounds.
After some time we gave up with freezing hands and feet.
It was snowing on the way home to Sacramento and Highway 80 looked like a big toboggan run with snow bank to bank.
It took us 4 hours to get there and 8 hours to get home.......
