Tons of boats, lots of bank anglers, very sunny day for a float... that’s about all I got. What more could you want? Oh yeah, couple of very big seals...
Good luck,

Low holed as I made my third cast in a lower river run. Was hiking upriver later to cross to an island in the ever-open stretch of the river and found the path blocked by a homeless camp. Growled at humanity and found a run where I could at least get into a casting rhythm and regain some Zen. Went to a great New Years Day get together for the afternoon, regained my faith in humanity. On balance, a good day.
Oh, no grabs.

Good recap JB hahaha! On point.
Saw a big male sea lion (about as big as the damn drift boats!) grab a sucker fish. I don’t know if it swallowed it or if just killed it for the heck of it.

We gave up on being low holed, and such about ten minutes into day, had a much more relaxing time that way. Agree that despite the crowded conditions some could have easily made a few small concessions here and there to each other that would go a long way towards everyone’s enjoyment. Not sure why the little things are so tough for some. Having a boat does help when things get hectic, but still...

February can be the top month for Winter Run Steelhead in the LAR.
March/April is usually good for Half-pounders, and spring run Blue Back Steelhead.
If the flow stays low look for them to stack up from Watt Avenue down to Paradise / Cal Expo area.
Might rain Friday?

whats a good drift boat run there, put in and take out? Sailor Bar to Watt Ave. is how long?

That’s a very long drift. Most would do Sailor to Rosmore or down to Grist Mill.

Well we showed up at sailors at 6:15 to a line of boats 8 deep and counting, turned around and put in at sunrise which was empty. Two of us fished with one of the local guides who was in contact with a couple at sailors all day.fished hard all morn for zip, just like everyone else. Got to geothe and took the back way around and bam, 20" hen. Not another bite and took out at grist millat 3:30. Mabey im wrong but i think i got the only fish on monday. I believe the sealions had everything to do with it. 2 of them were already at grist mill when we got there. Its time something is done about the sea lions, our fishery is devistated enough without the few there are being harrased by these things that are now all the way to the hatchery

Yup a sea lion, saw it swimming around bright and early at the chute, but moved up river quickly.
I was out on monday as well and faired pretty good. Best opener I have had in a few seasons. I didn't take my boat and only fished for a few hours as I was leaving to go up and guide the Trinity the next day.
I didn't move around to much, ended up sticking 10 fish landing 5, most where the 20 to 22" Coleman strain fish, super fat chunky hot footballs, a combination of wild and hatchery fish. I did end up hooking one big fish about 8-10lbs but broke it off cuz a guide boat went through the chute and stuck a fish and of course my fish took off and the boat floated over my line, so instead of getting tangled and loosing both fish, I busted mine off.
All in all a great way to start the year off. Hope to see it continue with rain in the near future.
Hey pv good choice on the T, it's fishing good.

Sea lions have nothing to do with fish population. Take the dams out and stop commercial fisheries from netting whole schools of fish and I’m sure you wouldn’t see any sea lions this far up rivers. And if you’re concerned about harassing steelhead or salmon than you should probably stop fishing all together. Blaming sea lions for fish numbers is crazy.

Umm, where did i say anything about fish populations ? What i said, and ill say it slow this time, the. Sealions. Turned. Off. The. Bite! I know perfectly well whats causing the demise of our fisheries, and it aint commercial fishing. Lack of flow, diversions, water mismanagment, hatchery mismanagment, cutting smolt releases, just to name a few that are well ahead of commercial fishing

Rossflyguy, I would respectfully submit that you need to do some reading on the subject of sea lion predation before calling someone crazy.

When human actions/intervention cause unnatural conditions favorable to expanding the range of a voracious predator such that sensitive, threatened and/or endangered species numbers are sufficiently reduced as a result... then YES, it is a problem.
Ultimately, it is not the sea lion's fault for s/he is merely doing what survival instincts dictate.
However, relocation and/or euthanization, if found to be in the best interest of the salmonids and the ecosystem at large, is entirely ethical and humane.

A lot is thanks to killing of big numbers of great whites once major predator that keeps them in check.
I landed two (seemed like eel strain fish) and three HP’s in the two days I was out.

I was out at the Moke on the 1st. Kind of shoulder to shoulder. More cars in the parking lot than I'd seen in a while. The Delta Fly Fishers had a tent set up. I saw a few smolt-sized fish caught. I only fished a little as I was swinging a single hander and not much room for that. A couple nibbles, but no fish for me. Most everybody I saw fly fishing was indicator fishing. Everyone was camped out. Nobody moving though runs / holes. Water was clear and low. If you could arrange a float to Stillman, you could probably find a bit of peace.

Ummmmm you should probably reread your statement. You didn’t say anything about the bite turning off. Your exact words were “something needs to be done about the sea lions, our fisheriey is recasted enough”. Maybe you should type slower so you can read what you say.

I’ve read this stuff. You really think DFW is going to blame themselves or fishing practices that would lead to an outcry from fisherman or commercial fisheries? Let’s be real. Commercial fishing has become way too effective in catching thousands of pounds of salmon/steelhead. Those nets don’t discriminate on where fish come from what watershed. They’re scooping up fish that come from sensitive watersheds. On top of the millions of anglers catching these fish in rivers, to the dams that block spawning habitats. You’re really gonna sit there and post data to blame sea lions? It’s funny you all are so quick to blame an animal that evolved alongside salmon/steelhead but you wouldn’t blame striper who’ve been in these waters for maybe 120 yrs? Sounds like you all just wanna keep the rod bent on anything that’s photo worthy and blame something that would effect you from catching these “trophy” fish.

Thanks for the report. I would lie and say its a go to for me but its only 1 hour drive for me and when I can't make it up the mtn I sometimes will go. Flows around 350? Not surprised it was busy because there isn't a lot of open water on lower moke unless you float it.
Maybe I will hit up the AR. might be a little better option.

I fished on AR on 31st. I would have preferred that on the 1st. I feel you can at least spread out a bit and find a little bit of your own water. I mean, if I'm not going to catch fish anyway, at least I can enjoying the casting... :rolleyes:The Moke could be a sweet little river, but there are just so many people fishing now days and it's so close. I would think a weekday could be a little better, but probably not much better...
I'm tired of driving anyway. With no rain on the north coast, the AR is it for me in January.

Counted approximately 34 steelhead in the holding raceway at the hatchery today. Hopefully they're just running a little late. The lower river (Riverbend Park downstream to Paradise Beach) might be good choice until more fish show up. Flows are down to 2000 cfs which means longer leaders and smaller flies (1-2 inches). Try an intermediate tip when fishing during low light conditions.
Good Luck-JP

Commercial fisherman in California troll for salmon. 6 lines per boat, single, barbless hooks (circle hooks if using bait). No nets. They can't take steelhead. Whether or not the rules are followed is probably a subject for debate but when I've been out on the ocean thats what they appear to be doing.

I think ca salmon (and all salmon) range far off the coast in international waters, even as far as the western pacific. There they can be swept up. From what I read that's the toughy with managing stocks for a certain river as the fish cruise the oceans well away from their natal rivers. So if a trawler off of some far away place grabs a school that is full of say butte creek sprinters it jacks up the return numbers. Supposedly they seasonally run the salmon highway in close to shore where they are out of net range. What I don't know is to what extent salmon cruise the ocean in schools of their own river? Are they always with their crew or do they disperse into un related schools? Where's that guy who is the U.K. Davis salmonid biologist- Sean I think his name is?

I’d assume they all school up for safety but that’s an interesting question. As far as CA salmon, they migrate up north to feed. Commercial guys up in Oregon and WA say most of their catch is Feather river hatchery salmon. I think I read the same article about salmon being caught commercially who come from fragile river systems. I believe they were trying to push for commercial fisheries to fish river systems rather than ocean. So low number river runs come back up. That was their pitch.

Do your self a favorite and get out on the river this winter with fly fishing instructors Jeff Putnam, Andy Guibord or Doug Duncan.
They can teach you how to "read the water" so you will have a better idea where to fish.

My thoughts are something like,
"Get out a here you chatty sumbitch and leave 'MY' fish alone!" and "ahhhh look at tha' cute lil guy... Damn those lil F'ers sure have a lot of energy and character..."
In other words, I do believe they spook the fish and I might as well go elsewhere
BUT I don't blame the otter as he belongs there as much or more than I
I don't blame the sea lions for being in the river either BUT I do believe the big bull should be relocated during the salmon spawn and at the peak of steelhead season

There are 4 on the American River that I know of. And yesterday evening my brother was trying his luck on the Feather for Spotted bass. About 5 pm he heard big noise on the water. After spotting my brother it took off underwater and down river. But not before a casualty fell dead. It was a nice bright 25” +- steelhead. But it did not take it being it being it spotted by brother maybe. (This is a guess as to why it might have left it behind).

Those who grew up here should make a map of local names and how they came to be called that. Its surprising how things get past down through the years.
The Basin (the wall, the point, high wall, clay bank, lower clay bank, bridge, weir)
Hatchery (the sign the blackberries, the willows, the fig tree, the glory hole, the apron, the iris)
Sailor Bar (geriatric hole, the cliff/crack, the point, the cove, the side cut, the bowl, lower Sailor Bar Island)
The Beaver Lodge, the clay cliffs, the archipelago, Easy E's (Earle Sloan) Hole)
Dog Beach, Bobber Alley, Toyon, The Greens, Upper Sunrise, U.S. Side Channel, Toyon, Bill Lowe's Swing Run, Sunrise Boat Launch, Red Fair Oaks Bridge, The Deeps, Gold River Creek, Sunrise BLVD, Sunrise/Jim Jones Walk Bridge, Diagonal gravel bar, Alder root ball hole, Lower Sunrise Island, artificial spawning gravel project side channel #1, Dead Man's Curve, Sacramento Bar, Upper El Manto turn, The Pinch, Big Bertha (where kids jump into 25' hole in river), Last Chance Riffle (above San Juan Rapids), SJR, Rossmoor rope swing hole, Rossmoor boat launch, the pipe, house on the hill, beaver alley, Effie Yeaw bend, Ancil Hoffman, small island, Lone Cottonwood, the rockpile (cement chunks), dogleg, rafter run, Gilligan's Island, Ancil Hoffman Beach. Old Lighthouse, Hagan Park, Rock Piles 1,2 and 3, barbless/barbed hook boundary/power line towers, Three Rivers or The Forks, Sarah Court, Goethe salmon flosser hole, the clay minefield, no man's land, Goethe Bridge, Arden Braids, Arden Rapids in middle fork and both side channels (1 natural and 1 created on south side), Gibbs Minnow snaggin hole, Walnut Orchard, The Pink House (really it's cream colored...) the confluence, Harris Hole, The Grotto, Graffiti aqueduct, Arden Powerlines, The Kitchen (named by Mike Koe because when he fished it, he could see people making breakfast in their kitchen of their house overlooking the hill/hole...) Corner Pocket, Hilltop Manor, William B Pond outflow, Harrington Access, Gristmill Access, Bird Island, logs and stickups, Bass Alley, Rio Americano Ponds, Rio Americano Island, Rio Inlet, The Sewer, Sarah Park, Estate Street Access, Turtle Bay, The Clay Humps (where Bill and Andy and most fly guys have fished at least 1,000 times for half-pounders in the fall and spring), Watt Ave Bridge...
That's my quick and dirty list and some of the names mean shit to most but it's all the reference points I need from Watt up. I'll finish from Watt down later...
There's not an inch of that river I have not waded and fished at least a shitload of times and many shitloads of times I've fished most spots...

It just kills me now... I moved to Sac in the late 80's to go to school at Sac State. Ended up staying after graduation all said for 10 years. Fished the river exactly once. Just below Campus Commons golf course. In the middle of the summer... With spinning gear...
Now, being a habitually early riser, I drive up there a few times a year for a few early morning hours of swinging on a Saturday or Sunday morn and back home around lunch. No luck as of yet. I'll gladly keep paying my dues though....
I wish I would have know more about these magnificent fish back then..... but then again maybe not.... I think i might have ended up on a completely different path!

Ha! Too funny. Me too! As a matter of fact, lived off of La Riviera Drive, all of about 2 blocks from the river. The only time we would fish back then was when it got over 100 degrees. We would grab a 6 pack, an ultralight, and go jump in the river to cool off. I'm not sure, but I think we caught one or two bass or bluegills or whatever. Wasn't as important as cooling off back then:D!!
Fishing cut into the social scene too much back then. Now it's part of it. How times change with age.
Here is a picture of our garage back then . . .13808

True how priorities change... That's picture is awesome. I too lived on La Riviera and on two different side streets off of La Riv..... I spent a lot of time at Larchmont Park playing soccer... it was right on the river... used to cool off down there after a good training session.

WOW I tip my hat. I've never even done a float. I used to ride the trail from folsom to discovery and back. Only started fishing it in the last 3 yrs. Have lived here 30+ yrs.
