for those who have never been to NZ there is a bit of a misconception about how well they manage their waters. no doubt they are head and shoulders above the USA in terms of resource management, but they still have their issues. the confluence of agriculture (cattle/sheep) and trout streams on these lowland type areas is a huge challenge as detailed nicely in this video and has been the subject of some recent bad blood between fisherman, the DOC, and the country's farmers. on the more true freestone rivers of the mountainous regions, watersheds are in tremendously good condition and generally exceptionally well managed.

one must also realize that the population of NZ is under 6M people, despite a land area nearly the size of CA. there are several swaths of the country that are 5-10x the size of Sacramento County that are only accessible by tramping or helicopter.
