I'll be on a family trip to Costa Rica in December. The only day I'll have much free time will be in Guanacaste. Anyone have experience fishing there? Guides? on my own? Whatever.

I was in Playas del Coco a few years ago and arranged a local guide directly with my accommodation. The experience was good, fishing a bit slow, caught a couple of small roosterfish in close to the coast. This was around Thanksgiving time if I remember correctly. If I can remember the name of the guide I will post it here...

Long story short depending on where you are staying it might be best to "ask the locals" so to speak.

Dec/Jan/Feb/March are not prime time in most tropical fisheries.

These months are good for a family trip because it is not so hot and humid and the bugs can be less severe.

This is just a average overview......

I feel this is pretty accurate from talking to many, reading much, having a home in Florida and going on tropical fishing trips for over 30 years.

Bill,

Those are prime time months for billfish if you're after that kind of fish in that general area.

I think you are right Tony......

Costa Rica is more offshore for billfish and inshore for Roosters and Snook.

I was too focused on flats fishing in Central America.

If you are east away from Nicoya Penn. Lake Arenal has fantastic Guapote (Rainbow Bass) Fishing.
