Interesting read. My oldest son still likes to relate his story about meeting Bill one day on the Gualala in the mid 80's. Having criticized my 14 year old for letting his back cast drop into the water, he proceeded to instruct the boy as to the proper method of casting a shooting head set-up. As the day progressed my son ended up being the spotter on the South side of the river while a group of us fished a small pod freshies in what I think was the "Raceway" run. I myself was admonished that day for not immediately breaking off a foul hooked fish by Bill. Something to the point that "If you don't feel the head shake right off let em' go".

Thanks ID,

I was also able to fish next to Bill one day in the 1970s but sadly no words were exchanged.

He was actually at the top of Minor hole in his little pram.

I was below him and then only a few more anglers below me.

He was the only one who hooked a fish....

I had many old friends in Sacramento who were of the Greatest Generation and fished over on the north coast.

They are almost all gone now.

I was very fortunate to be taken over there by them to experience the end of that era in the 1970s.

Anyone interested in the history of the fly fishing on the North Coast of California for salmon and Steelhead needs to buy or at least watch the movie, Rivers of a Lost Coast.

I ran across Bill infrequently in my childhood, late 50's up till the early 70's, then for a short while in the mid 80's. I did mention my father that day on the Gualala and he remembered him from the Smith River. He never struck me as a talkative guy, or at least not to me, very focused on his fishing. Good to of fished in the presence of a legend for sure!
