If you want to see something neat, or take your grand kids to see something special, now is the time to go explore any of the inlet streams where Kokonee reside most of the year.

Last weekend my wife and I took our grandson to Taylor Creek at South Lake Tahoe for it's annual Salmon Festival. What a site to see all these bright red salmon working their way up the creek to get to good spawning gravel. The season has already started but is still early and should peak in another couple of weeks.

The ranger giving the presentation said that because of the drought conditions the past few years the returning run of fish is not as great as they'd like to see. But, this past year was a very wet year and they expect great returns in the next couple of seasons.

When my wife and I were living up there we'd see Kokonee in all of the streams around Truckee. Most often on the Little Truckee where it comes into Boca reservoir you could see them from the road above the stream. Also when fishing they were always around China Cove on Donner, and also at the upper reaches of Stampede. I'm sure any lake up that way that has water running into it will have Kokonee trying to spawn, and now is the time to go see.

Besides the bright red of the fish, the Aspens are all starting to change to gold colors amongst the green conifers.

We always enjoy going to hatcheries with the kids.

55 years ago I saw Kokanee spawn in a similar creek and the memories are still vivid today... a creek out of the Flathead River MT.

In 1988, we took the kids to see it and no fish. Montana Fish & Game had tried to improve what was a spectacular Kokanee population in Flathead Lake but instead killed it off in less than 10 years.

If you have never heard about what happened to the Flathead Lake, you can find lots of articles online. You will have a new appreciation on unintended consequences.

My Dad always said "If it's not broke don't fix it". I think that logic has been lost to F&G Departments all over the country.

there were a few hanging around the tailout of the bat cave on the LT on Sunday, not as many as I had hoped to see. others were fishing the inlet to the lake so I didn't get to see if there were more down that way. seems like they were just getting moving up for the fall, i guess in 2-3 weeks it will be at peak, maybe sooner.
