Terry Thomas and friends went Sept 9/10, 2017 with jet boat guide Alan Borges on the lower Rogue River.

Half-pounders were very good with floating lines, tapered leader and small #8/10 nymphs and Steelhead patterns.

They fished the lower river up to the mouth of the Illinois River.

Being in a jet boat with a good fly fishing guide is a huge advantage.

The lower river is very accessible by vehicle too.

Get a Streamtime map for access info.

Mid-Aug through September is the time for the lower river.

The middle/upper river around Grants Pass is in perfect shape for wading now too.

Mid-Sept to mid-Nov is a good timing for the upper river for adults.

Bill, do you know if it's possible to navigate that section with a 14' John and a prop motor?

I'm not particularly familiar with John boats overall, but I would imagine that heavy headwinds could be problematic? That section of river can get very windy at times. Above the mouth of the Illinois river there are a couple of rapids that would be a bit much.

I think you could do some of the lower reaches in that rig.....just be sure to have a PFD on.

Lets haul her up to the Lower section and give it a go, Jason! We've got PFD's... should be fine..

Gary, using a prop on the lower Rogue is not a good idea. Check out a Stream guide; there are some good walk in runs.

Terry is correct.....

There is very good road access on the Lower Rogue River.

This is not true on the Lower Klamath River.

Starting at about the Lobster Creek area, you'll encounter a series of riffles all the way up into Agnes.
The mail boats often employ a smaller jet boat to "blow" out passages. The StreamTime map shows
many access points. One of our favorites for years has been the "Dinkleberg" bar just upstream from
the bridge near Lobster.

Another option is to take the mail boat ride up to Agnes and see the river for your self. Talk to the driver and tell him what you are looking for.
