Cal was one of the better fly fishers of that time.

He ran around with Al Perryman, Larry Cullen, Jim Potter, Forrest Oldham and Al Fong.

Picture was taken by me at West Capitol Rod & Gun where I worked at the time.

Al Perryman and Cal caught a bunch of Stripers that morning at the mouth of the Feather River.

He is still pretty good looking old guy.

hahaha

When I first saw the thread title, I was shocked that he was fishing again...
Then I clicked and saw the (1970s) part...
We chatted online many years ago but I never got to meet him.
It would be cool trading monster striper stories with him someday...

Back in the 1970s not too many were fly fishing for Stripers.

A fairly common belief was that you could not catch them in the day time with a fly.

In it's day that Pflueger Supreme came in two sizes, 577 for 8/9 rods and 578 for 10/11/12 rods.

Here is some good info on these old reels.

*The Tarus reels was a the best medium price salt water fly reel back in the day.

Bill: This fish weighed 40 pounds if my early 70's memory is still accurate.

Yes, we weighed it on the big outside scale at the bait shop.

Next biggest one was 24#

We took Polaroid pictures of everyone's fish and put them up in the bait shop.

People brought friends and relatives in to show them the pictures.
