The Klamath, Rogue and Sacramento River drainages are getting schools of these small Steelhead in now.
This year you might try the Eel River down low.
Look for them in the lower reaches of the river systems first.
Extremely early and late in the day, with low light levels, you can usually find them holding in the riffles.
Most just use a floating line at this time of day with a tapered leader about the length of he rod.
Small flies are swung just under the surface to these feeding fish.
Everything from a size #8/10 little fall Steelhead pattern to a size #10/12 nymph or wet fly can work.
At times egg imitation can be needed or even matching the hatch like trout fishing.
*Start looking for them in the Lower American River down around River Park, Howe Avenue and Watt Avenue.
**Be sure to fish barbless and to get a steelhead report card ($7.05)
