I don't know if you have looked at this site. Though it is a lot like google maps, the topo and forest service maps help with terrain and trails. Another thing I found and is really pretty cool is when in satellite mode, move the yellow icon(lower right corner above the +/- ) out and you will see small blue dots. These dots are panoramic pictures from someone who recorded a ground view of that area. So find a area like Desolation, or where ever, drag the icon to a dot and your there.

National Geographic has every 7.5' topo map in the us as a PDF. Don't have the link handy but google it. Each topo has an overview map and then 4 pieces of the map. Printed out on 11x17 they work great.
