Summer is here no doubt.....
Not as hot up here, but, pretty warm for these parts.....90deg.
The river is down about two ft...it may yo-yo on weekends...
The river is clearing. 2-3ft of vis.. 60 deg.
Some tribs are really pumping. Below Grays crk. the river is a little off color.
Up near town it is fishy....Starting to be able to get a drift under the bushes with a dry.
With the lower the flows out of Tahoe....time to fish the upper river........

Bugs are happening!
Green drakes, Golden stones, Little Yellow sallies, are the mainstays.
About time to swing a Caddis in the evening......
Hoppers are around, maybe sink'em.
Midges, crawling ants, and worms of course.
Streamers are working...but you need to get down.
Bring heavy tips...
Bring ABs....

We can wade for the moment...

It is going early and late, with a lull mid-day.
Crack-o-noon anglers will suffer.
Be on the water by 8-9;00 AM. watch the birds to see it switch on.......

Wet years produce more mosquitos, come prepaired on the LT......long sleeves, pants, and maybe a head net.
I like casting gloves with spray on them, not my skin.
Great time for bird life, bucks in velvet, and warm dark nights with many stars....

Have fun out there......
Treat'em nice.

A mite warm mid-day, but really nice in the morning and evening....
Which is when you should go fish.
Flows are 543 cfs in town but may yo-yo, weekdays to weekends.
Water temp is near 60 deg.
Lots of floaties on the water, that indicates water is warming..........
Fish will be moving to bubbly sections.

Golden stones are still happening...
Little yellow sallies...
Some drakes, a few PMDs, and occasional Isonychia.
Hoppers are doing their mating flights, and an afternoon breeze will cause them to fall on the water....soggy is good.
Worms, midges, ants ect.....

Had a friend turn a toad on a streamer.....about a 5 second meeting....big guys have game...do you?
The warmer water is letting them chase a bigger bite.
Bring a big stick and swing like they are Steelhead....because some think they are.....
Be a little sneaky....watch your shadow, don't wave your rod too much, no splashy casts, stand behind rocks and bushes......
Bring your A game in other words........

Wet wading is in vogue right now...sandals with studs would be nice.
Long sleeve shirt, and quick-dry pants are best.
I suggest you get out there......winter will be back soon enough......

Thx for the report. Any updates on Gray creek down to state line in terms of muddy water? Last week it was spitting some ugly stuff.

Probably a seismic influenced slide in the trib
Normal stuff....
Nothing stays the same...
Locals sorta feel, if we have a ft. of vis....it's game on...
And I have fished less....I don't think of it as being blown out....just a time for bling, and big Jucy bits......
I would say just fish the other side , till it clears....could be a while......

As a guide, and on the water a lot, I'm always puzzled about folks feeling a week old report could help much..
Sure it's entertaining if they caught something of size...or have a good fish tale..we like that...
A winter report perhaps can coast a while, because it stays the same for months. but this time of year things change quickly.....
I can't hardly keep up, and I'm standing here, with only 18 mi. of water, and only 1 drainage....I wouldn't dream of trying to report on all norcal water.....maybe a report based on my past expirience..but not current conditions......
Reports and fish are both best fresh...
That's all I try to provide.......

Flows have dropped to summer lows. Even though we have water this year, the surface release and lower water, is warming things....Down in the canyon temps are better.
Temp was 66 deg in town yesterday, and climbing.
You can always tell when we should consider fishing elsewhere on colder water, because of the number of rafters and floaties.....
If it feels good to us.....it's too warm for the fish. Dissolved oxygen is very low in warm water.....
I recommend fishing early rather than later...... we don't want to do harm to our fishy friends.
Bigger fish have a harder time recovering, so we can easily do damage to our fishery chasing toads in the evening...after dusk...fish heavier leader...not 5-6x.
That way, you won't over-play them.

Bug wise.....
Yellow sallies, the occasional Golden stone, sparse PMD.....
A cloud passed over and I saw BWOs...
(On a speculative note..finding Oct. Caddis sealed up already..... )
Bigger sedge, lots of Glossasoma.....
Hoppers, Hoppers.
No/few risers......sink'em all.....
The fry in the shallows are thumb size.....swing it!
The hoards are out....walk a ways for some water, it may help your stats....
A large number of these fishers stand where they should fish...make two hundred drifts through a hole....and don't change their set-up much. I always say....don't fish like the other guy. Be sneaky, don't crowd the fish, and adjust frequently for best results.
Treat'em nice.....keep'em wet....

Jim,

Thanks again for your sage reports. I always enjoy reading them. Hard to imagine 2 weeks ago that you could get washed down to Reno if you slipped in the wrong place, and now water temps are very borderline already! This year has been strange in many regards for sure.

EXACTLY.....
Wasn't saying don't report.....
Just that a lot can happen in a week, and no two years are alike.
Too many fishers fish from memory/habit.....it is the main hurdle to becoming a better fisher......
"Be here now" is not just for poets/monks.
To me, it's the banner that fly fishers fly...
I can hint to forum members about things I hear about creeks, lakes, and other moving waters, because of a bunch of serious fishers give me a call, or email. (With fishy porn)...and I do get out a bit...
But, I can only actually report facts if I'm here. The way good journalism used to be.....now days folks can make up stuff...alt-facts?....of course, fishing info has always been suspect..........ha!
The mantra taught to me by water....
"I can only be in one place at a time, and tommorow will be different".....

Or, as Chevy said...."Danny,...be the ball"....

And thanks...
Jim

Cooling off the legs after a run, not fishing, but this little one stopped by to say hello. Thought some folks would want to know...13084

Jim...thanks for the great reports.

I think the Truckee River has one of the most diverse menus of things for the fish to eat.

Over my 50 years in the tackle business with some hit and miss fishing on the Truckee and listening to hundreds of people's stories of fishing it, I think for the average fly fisher it is not very consistent or easy.

I do think it is very close for the Valley crowd and bay area folks. I think it has a large population of wonderful wild trout too.

I think going on one of those group clinics or hiring a local guide would be a smart move unless you are already dialed into it's nuances.

Thanks Bill.....
It's easy to report, it's just hard to be accurate....

Flows are steady and lowish.....very clear.
Get up early......unless you just like casting practice....
I watched a guy roll-out at 11.00 am and fish for several hrs., after everyone had left for the day. I always say, frustration is not conducive to learning...work with the fish's schedule for best results.
Fish the bubbles.....water is getting warmer.
A few risers, but I would suggest fishing deeper....
Treat'em nice....

Damn, from raging to lowish in 2 weeks!!!! Who would have thought. Saw 246 cfs in Truckee! Will be hitting the river next weekend. Looking forward to these flows.
