Been down here in La Paz for 6 weeks and all this week I'm fishing with a friend/client. On some days, the fishing has been tough and the lack of bait is tough, especially the sardina's. There are bally hoo in the area but it's not as good as the sardina's. Now that the warmer weather is here, the fishing has started to pick up.

Lot's of big roosters, some dorado, a few jacks here and there and the wahoo. The wahoo bite has been pretty good for some and not so good for others.

The past 3 days, I've gone to the dark side and trolling Rapala's in dorado color and purple for wahoo. It's been pretty successful for both Bill and I. We have landed 4 big wahoo and probably lost at 5. Yesterday we had a double hookup with 5 seconds of each other. The lines got tangled and as Captain Israel was going under and over my rod and back under and over my rod again, Bill's wahoo came unbuttoned. I landed mine within 10 minutes, it weighed in at 28lbs. Smaller than what we had a couple days ago, but I'm not complaining. The first wahoo I landed to me 30+ minutes to get in. First time I've ever hooked a fish on a trolling rod. When this wahoo hit, it had 200 yards of mono stretched out over the sea of cortez and was still swimming. Then I started wondering if I was going to get spooled. The fish took out 150+ of dacron backing. Now came the problem, I had to crank all this line back in, wheww. Got it to the boat and Israel beat the he** out of it before bringing it into the boat. Bill lost one and had another grab but wasn't hooked up. I guess if you want to have ONO POKE & ONO SASHIMI, and can't get them on fly, you do what you have to do.

I do have a rod rigged up for wahoo, because day before yesterday, we saw 4 cruising wahoo 15' from the boat and about 3' down. Didn't have the rod rigged up then. But it's like taking a knife to a gun fight - a TFO Mangrove rod, Nautilas reel with a 10wt RIO OBS F/I, 18" of 80# wire with a 8" mackerel fly attached. Also 6' of 40lb Mono I would like to hook and landed a wahoo on the fly but I looking at it with a fairly open mind. If I do hook one and it takes all the lines before I can stop it, I've accomplished what I wanted to do....Hook a wahoo on the fly.

This was my first wahoo. Estimated around 60+ pounds. Look at the girth. Two chunks for the girth weighed 11 pounds. Lot's of ONO POKE & ONO SASHIMI

Here's a couple more photo's from yesterday and the day before. Check out the length of the fish. I'm 5'8" and it's almost as tall as I am. The head shot shows you why you want to club the fish first before putting it i the box. Those teeth are razor sharp. Yesterday, I talked to one of the guys trolling who lost a big wahoo. He said the fish bit the Rapala in half and had the upper section to prove it.
We couldn't find a wahoo today but found a couple schools of dorado who wanted to chew on some flies. Tomorrow, it's one hour searching for wahoo, while we wait for the bait guys then off to find some dorado and rooster fish. Kinda tired of trolling, not my game but if you want some good eats, you'll have to step down and go to the dark side.

Seems going to the dark side makes your beard more white Jay! And maybe Israel's panza mas grande!
