Aloha, went out on April Fool's day and got this nice Big Island bone.

Got it on my TFO BVK 6wt and a TFO 340 reel with 12lb tippet. It went into the backing a couple of times and I was able to keep it out of the rocks. It swam away healthy and strong. Hope you weren't fooled on April Fool's day, Mems.

That's a whole lot better bone than we saw at Christmas Is. And on a 6 wt. to boot had to real fun. Without giving any exact spots that looks to be north of the airport near some of the hotels, maybe A-bay ?

Aloha, Tony

Aloha Tony, you are very close. A-bay had the Lava man triathalon on saturday so it was a zoo there. I went fishing just a little farther north. We call it Bruce's rock. It was fun on a 6wt and it is larger than most CI bones. I have caught some large ones there, but you usually have more flats to work with. This area is tough with reef and lava rocks, and the occasional dumb tourist, who has no idea that double digit bones are swimming around. I think it takes a while to understand how much pressure you can put on 12lb tippet. Hope you have a great spring season, Don.

WOW!!! That's a really nice bonefish!! Considering all of the obstructions in the water and the 6weight rod, you must've been on the run trying to keep it together.... Great photo's!!

Thanks Darian, it was good fun on the 6wt and it is a challenge to land one of this size at this spot. Both you and Tony have been to CI so you know the drill there. I love catching bones of all size, but there are bones and then there are big bones. The big ones don't get that way by being stupid. I didn't really go on a run, just stayed on the rock and was able to turn the fish before it went around a corner to cut me off. I fish a lot for bones in Hawaii, and have a few spots where I know the behavior, it is just nice when a plan comes together. I don't take clients here too often, and the fish are hungry here and will eat. I do miss CI and the bahamas and large schools of bones. Here in Hawaii it is just such a challenge, so it makes it even more rewarding.
On another note, looks like roosters are already showing up in baja this year. I hope every one has a great spring and summer this year. Don.

Yep!! I've seen some early photo's from the Lucero Ortiz group and the Roosters are large. It's reported that the Sardina's are back, too. Can't wait to get down there in June.

Nice work on the 6wt.Don... The Hawaiian and (similarly) the Aitutaki fish are thick through the shoulders alright.
