Looking at investing in a switch rod. Mainly for the Yuba, but also for the American and the Trinity. If I was going to use one specific switch rod for the American and the Trinity I was going to go with a 6 or 7wt switch but because I'm going to use this rod on the Yuba as well I wanted to know if a 5wt switch or 6wt would be a better bet. Is a 7wt switch to heavy for the Yuba? Also is a 5wt switch to light for the American and Trinity? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Nic , if you're going for one rod I go for a five weight. It would be more fun for the Yuba and Trinity but I think it would still handle some American steel plus shad. I used to fish a 10' 6 wt single handed for American winters. Like I tell everyone though they gets into the two hand game , you'll have a arsenal of rods in no time.

I went with a economy Cabelas TLR 6wt and a Rio switch line. Quickly went to a Skagit Compact line which convinced me that switch rods might be worth while. BUT, along comes the Single-Hand heads and I'm thinking I've found my groove.

From my experience, I'd say an 11ft 5wt will cover most of your needs. High water winter work probably only covers 10% of your yearly fishing.

Personally I would want a 4 Switch rod for the Lower Yuba River and a 6 Switch for the Trinity and American.

A Switch rod line size is 2 size over in a single hand rod so a 4 Switch is the same power as a 6 weight single hand rod.

I have an Echo SR (5wt) and a 6wt for the American and it has been great thus far. I hope to get to the Yuba and Trinity.

That being said, I'm considering a 7 or 8wt for surfcasting and bigger rivers.
