I have for Sale my Sage VT2, 3wt 7'9", 2-13/16oz. Blank is Blue, Case is matching. Great shape a little discoloration of the cork but no other issues. Asking $175.00 pickup in Alameda CA.

Review by Guide Tad Howard: The VT2 replaces the VPS in the Sage line up. The VT2 offers top quality performance at an affordable price point. This slightly faster action rod has a sensitive feel, yet impressive power similar to the more expensive XP series that has been a fly fishing benchmark for anglers seeking fast action fly rods. The Sage VT2 fly rod casts and fishes like a $600 rod at a $400 price point.

The bold blue finish in the VT2 easily catches the eye; however the smooth powerful action is what makes the rod special. The hardware on the rod is very functional and complements the finish nicely.

The VT2 represents a good value and was my personal favorite performer when tested side by side with other $350-$450 fly rods from other manufacturers.

Not yet but it looks like a new one except the cork has some discoloration from fishing with it.

I will see what I can do in the morning.

Sounds good. What lines did you cast on it?

I did a test 3 years ago with several lines on the VT2 here are my results for my style of casting.

RIO 2wt DT (1/2 line size heavy) scored 8
SA Mastery 3 wf scored 7
Bass Pro 3wt DT scored 8
Orvis Superfine 4 wf scored 9
Orvis Access Trout 4 wf scored 7
Orvis Hydros Trout 4dt scored 8

So I was using the BP 3wt DT originally and switched to the Superfine Trout 4wf line after my tests. I would bet that a Rio Grand line in 3wf would be perfect as it is a heavier 3wt line.

Thanks for posting the photos and line reviews! Was the SA line a GPX, by chance? Sounds like she's more 4wt than 3, eh?

The SA 3wt was the Mastery series Trout line. A GPX would probably been a better line for this rod as it is a half line size heavier. The Trout line is 100 grains @ 30' and the GPX is 110 grains @ 30'.

As with most Sage rods it is a fast rod so while casting normal trout distances a std 3wt line is fine. I used the 3wt DT line from BP for about 4 years before I went to the 4 wt line but that 4 wt line has a 9' front taper so it acts more like a 3.5 wt line at short distances (12' leader and 10'-12' of fly line). That is why I think the RIO Grand would be a good choice in a 3wt line it is a full line size heavy but it has a 14' front taper.

Bump, I sent the rod up to my uncle in Sacramento area to meet up with a member from here. The member called me after testing the rod and he told me that he had another rod that he was looking at that he liked more but mine was less expensive. So he was unsure I recommended for him to buy the more expensive rod if he liked it more as he could purchase mine but he would still want the other rod (50 years experience told me that was true) so he decided to buy the other rod. Meanwhile this one is still for sale if anyone is interested.

Is the rod still in SMF, or back with you in Alameda?

Thanks
