Many people come fishing........
I take anyone out that feels the need to fish.
My favorite client, is one who doesn't just want a fish, but really burns to learn........
Here's a sometime client Stephen getting his game on.
If you study, and not just hope, the T can provide a learning challenge that is first rate.
Now, Stephen is on the hunt for Walter.......he has connected, but still working on landing him.
Give a shout if you have been struggling to meet with fish better than twenty inches.
Because, although that would be a trophy most places...here, it's entry level angling.
We often see fish that size, and smaller, but it takes better technique to consistently tag big fish.
I stay as far from stocked fish as possible, because wild fish aren't fond of them......the wrong body language I guess...
And they don't present the same challenge to catch or land.
Wilder the better.......
Now for some fresh river speak....

Edit....11-19-16
Flows are slightly up and off-color but not blown out if you know how to fish.
It will clear soon.
Still have a mix of bugs....but the menu is narrowing down coming into winter...
Baetis, PMDs, and some little white Mays.
A few Caddis fluttering...and the occasional winter stone...
Midges are a good bet.
Still getting a few follows on a streamer, but it is a slower retrieve...

Fish are actually looking up right now.....must be hungry as the menu gets smaller. That, and they feel Winter comin'.
It snowed all day in town...a fat one inch of snow (already melted) will not slow angling....

It's started freezing puddles at night, so hoppers are done, but have heard a Stimy still might get interest...
We have smoke on the water in the morning, which gets me all twitchy....
Bring a coat for evenings, daytime temps are closer to T-shirt, OK a long sleeved T. OK, maybe some fleece...

Treat'em nice!

Thanks Jim.....

I have fished the Truckee River in California "off and on" for 50 years.

That said, I know very little about the river today.

50 years ago our fly fishing techniques were very limited compared to today.

We use to drive up after work in the summer from Sacramento to just fish the evening hatch.

MapQuest says it is 2 hours from our shop in Sacramento to the town of Truckee.

Also it gets it's share of pressure too.

It has a reputation for being a tough river to be consistent on.

I think it has one of the most diverse menus for the fish to eat anywhere.

Maybe this is why it is hard for most who don't really know it well.

It is famous for big Brown trout and very hot Rainbows plus some Whitefish.

I highly recommend that most of us need to go with a local guide to learn some of it's secrets.

Thanks Bill!
Every time you post, I offer....Come on up!
Maybe next year when you come back from FL.

1-2 inches of fresh snow, and snowing lightly now....
Roads good in town....
Sun peeking again......

Flows up very slightly, and clear...
The river is closed obviously from trout crk to Tahoe city..
Low water from trout crk to Hirschdale. Below that to NV. is nice.

Sporadic streamer fishing with falling water temps. 38-44 deg.
If you get the follow..don't take it away...let'em eat.

Some fish rising, and nymphing is working well.
Baetis...Burks silhouette Dun for a dry or Cutters Bi-vis.
Caddis are about gone, but still see one now and then.
Little Winter stones are showing up....
Midges of course. Both Griffith's and zebra...juju, disco, etc. sz20
Air temps are nice, but bring some fleece, and a misty/rain jacket.
Two pairs of socks might be a good idea, with falling temps 38-44 deg.
Getting slippery, so you might bring a staff in addition to studs.
No snow balling up yet, but rubber soles are best in winter.
Not many folks out, the "fairweather" guys and girls are gone.
Skiing has started to kick in......so that leaves water to those of us without sports conflict....
When I was younger I thought the same.......now I think Winter is some of the best fishing to be had. Going out now!
Have fun, be safe...
Treat'em nice.

It's official!!!
WINTER IS HERE!
Only 8" in town, but it's a start.........
Blue skies and just above freezing, and dripping, very nice actually.
Trees are starting to shed already...ground is chilly enough not to have a flash melt, so flows will rise slowly.
Water is 42 deg and clear. Low flows near town.
Bring your rubber soled boots w/studs for best results.
Double socks are a good call for longer comfort.
No cotton in winter period.......
Think layered fleece, and a nice hat/gloves.....
A wind breaker is also nice......
Maybe bring a staff.

The bug report won't change much from here on..........till March....
Start getting a winter collection going.
Baetis are the mainstay bug that is big enough to readily see...
Burks silhouette Dun, Cutters Bi-vis, sz 20-18.
A variety of nymphs 22-16 very dark/olive.
Midges, possibly the most underrated of food forms, get eaten all winter, and all day.
It took me a few years, to appreciate the winter midge clique. But count me in!
Griffiths Gnats (for when they are clumping), emergers and adult dry (for mid-morning), down wing adult dries (for evenings).
Nymphs, can be almost anything small and/or.... black/chocolate/red....zebra, disco, etc....

Had a fishy friend go 0-4 on hook-ups....gentle takes (due to lower temps) and some very quick releases....I think they still remember last summer.
There will be risers to cast to, but when nymphing ya gotta hit them on the nose for love.
When you do hook-up.....move with'em...they are pretty hot when hooked.
Two of those were on a streamer, so.......maybe swing it.

Give it a day or so, let the visitors get down off the hill.

From here on, basic mountain prep......
Cal Trans has a summit cam...check it, if you ever don't see any cars moving....wait awhile. I do....
Bring plenty of gas....
Chains. And a dress rehearsal helps a lot.
Shovel (very important). A #10 aluminum scoop if you want to look like a local....
Extra clothing in case of a dip while wading, or if you get wet installing chains...
A little food too, it helps keep you warm....and water....
Same thing every winter....drive slow.... and live to play.

Keep'em wet, don't want to frost nip gills!

Thx jim for the tips and advice. I know you like to keep this moving down but not much chatter lately so I thought I would chime in. When was the last time you saw almost a foot in town? I know some of the resorts reporting up to 18" and down in eastern sierra (Mammoth) they got 2 feet plus.

Took the kiddos out boarding..... I'm getting old. Like you said a little gray in the beard.

I haven't been out in a couple weeks. Getting the itch big time.

Be safe.

It's true I prefer the post to scroll down the page.....
That way I can update the report, without bumping it back up.
Not trying to sit at the top....

Not into speculating about the weather as filler either.....
Mountain folk wait and see. Mostly by looking out the window.....which is pretty accurate...
Local real-time observations and true fish stories welcome.

Edit..1-08-17

No new snow...just rain for the last two days...and nights.
The river will be big tomorrow.....unsafe big....stay high and dry...

These conditions are about as bad as my memory allows.
More rain expected....
The snow base is disappearing fast....I feel bad for the folks down below.
Lots of water on the roads and slush.....don't drive if possible.
The fish will be there in a week......
