Fly patterns for salmon/steelhead

I am very new to fly fishing and I thought I'd give salmon a try today. I was using a basic orange egg pattern about a quarter inch in diameter under a strike indicator. I hooked into one, but in my excitement I grabbed the reel and he broke off. After that I had zero strikes.

I was basically copying all the guys drifting beads out there in hope it would have the same effect. Any advice on what to use and the kind of water to look for?
