Obituary for Dr. Donald Louis Powell

Dr. Donald Louis Powell passed away peacefully at home on September 22 after a brief illness. Dr. Don Powell was born in West Virginia on July 13, 1951. His parents were Donald Ray Powell and Marie Elizabeth Kopyar and stepmother Grace Belle Murrin.

Don was raised in Wheeling, West Virginia. He attended Triadelphia High School where he played on the high school basketball team. He then attended West Virginia University and West Virginia School of Medicine. In 1981 he was Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at Charleston Area Medical Center. He continued his medical education with a Rheumatology Fellowship at University of Pittsburg and became a die heart Pittsburg Steelers’ fan. Dr. Powell then moved to California and worked for the Veteran’s Affairs in the Bay Area and then as a Rheumatologist at Stockton Kaiser and San Joaquin General Hospital for many years.

Dr. Powell was an empathetic and dedicated physician beloved by his patients, colleagues and staff. While practicing medicine at San Joaquin General Hospital he mentored new physicians instilling in them the importance of compassion for patients.
Dr. Powell had a deep passion for the outdoors and fly-fishing that started when he was a boy in West Virginia. When Dr. Powell moved to the West Coast he fell in love with steelhead fishing. To his fishing buddies he was know as Dr. Spey. His greatest joy was swinging a fly and sharing a river with a fellow steelhead fisherman. He enjoyed traveling to different locations to fish such as British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Terra de Fuego, Christmas Island, and Belize. He was also happy fishing locally for black bass or stripers in the Delta, trout and steelhead in the Mokelumne and American Rivers or up north on the Sacramento, the Eel and the Trinity rivers and the Rogue River in Oregon. Besides fishing he had developed over the last 6-7 years a passion for golf both playing and watching the amazing feats of the pros on the PGA tour.

Dr. Powell is survived by many cousins in West Virginia and Ohio. His California family includes fishing and golfing friends, medical colleagues, patients and many friends who appreciated Don's generosity, kindness, patience and positivity.

Dr. Powell will have a private internment service at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, October 29th. The time and place will be announced on Don’s Facebook page.
