I've been using the basket (Hip Shooter) for some time now. I like
its light weight and packability. My one complaint is that a loop of line
will sometimes wrap tightly around one of the "cones" and cause
problems in casting. Trying to think of something I could coat the cones
with to prevent that.

Do you have the older one by Mangrove or the newer version by Sea Level?

I make the stripping baskets that Kiene's has in stock now. They are meant to be used from a boat and are heavy for stability and so as to not tip over in the wind or rocking of the boat. The baskets are solid PVC with a fully enclosed floor and rubber feet to prevent sliding. The interior floor is also PVC with Delrin posts for line control. Delrin is the slipperiest substance known to man and will never create drag on your line when casting. The upper part of the basket is rimmed with thick black foam on the inside for cushioning and colored foam on the outside to accent your boat's trim.
If you're getting ready for stripers in the delta or anywhere you fish, these are the best made baskets around for boat fishing line control.
I don't think I'd want to try tying one to my waist in the surf though :)

Bill,
I have the Sea Level Bucket Shooter II stripping basket.
Part of my problem might be wanting to wear it in front, rather than to one side.
My arthritic hands often have me switching my rod-holding and line-stripping
hands. Tony's basket with the Delrin posts look like the cat's pajamas;
I agree with him about wearing it in the surf. The old LL Bean and still-on-the-
market Orvis baskets come with no holes in the sides or bottoms; and you
could be brought to your knees if they filled with water. Mine look like swiss cheese!
Best to all,
Larry S
