After a couple days of dinks and only pan-sized bows, got this boy on the last run of the day on a good ol' Hares Ear #16 short shank...

Yeah, for every 50 trout you are going to catch in the Upper Sac most likely 49 or 50 will be rainbows. Not many browns that I'm aware of. Great fish and like Bill said.... Fish of a lifetime.

My Uncle has lived in Dunsmuir since after WWII. So I've been fishing the Upper Sac since I was a kid, and that is the absolutely largest trout (23-24") I've even caught. (Previous 18" bows.) But we've caught Browns all the way in the lower sections of town, although my Uncle never did for some reason. This Brown was caught at Soda Creek. I'm thinking it's up from the lake… A misguided McCloud run Brown?

Nice fish, it may be a lake run up spawning fish. If I remember correctly Browns spawn in the Fall

I fished the Upper Sac for about 50 years now and had a cabin there for 10 years and I have never caught a Brown trout from it.

Our old tax assessor, the late Bill Lynch, was one of the best fly fisherman around Sacramento in the old days.

He told me stories of catching Brown trout on streamers way below town in the Fall.

I have never caught a Brown trout in the Pit River that I fished for 50 years either.

Never caught a Brown trout in the Lower Yuba River.

Maybe I am not that good of trout stream fly fisher?

That big boy immediately ran up the riffle, so I knew it a biggie. And I got him on my dropper... and fortunately, a few casts before, I noticed it was a bit tattered, and I re-tied the dropper with 'thicker' 4.5 lb from the 4 lb dropper... WHOA!

Bill... all my life my Uncle George who lived there since WWII said there were only browns at the lower end of the Upper Sac and the water was too cold for them to come up to town, but when we were teens, my buddy Dave and I snorkeled behind my uncle's Southern Pacific cottage on the southern end of town, and we definitely saw a couple pan-sized browns! My uncle was amazed. Then my worm fisher cousin catches browns below town about the waste mgmt bridge. I've never caught any browns in there, but we used to catch an occasional Dolly Varden from town to Conant Rd. way back in the day... 1960's? maybe early 70's?
