View Full Version : To swing flies or indictor/nymph for Steelhead in the Fall?

About 20 years ago much of our Steelheading in Nor Cal was done with the indicator/nymph/egg system.

50 years ago, before indicators came on the scene, everyone cast and stripped/swung in the tide water or cast and swung up rivers for Steelhead. Most were using sinking shooting heads or floating lines for half-pounder steelhead.

Today, mostly due to the popularity of Spey casting, many are swinging flies again too.

I recommend that those who are in the nymphing mode, I would swing flies early and late in the day, and indicator/ nymph them in the day time. Also try to swing flies in the Fall...............Sept/Oct/Nov.......when the water is not too cold.

I also believe that the middle Klamath River in October is the best place to actually swing flies and hook something, mostly because of the higher numbers of small to medium size fish.
