Felt the urge.............

All the usual signs.....
The Summer crowd has left..campgrounds pretty empty.
Locals are stocking fire wood.
There is smoke on the water in the mornings.
Birds are flocking up, chatting about the long flight ahead.
It's my favorite time to fish.
Water temps have dropped with the night time temps.
Big fish are restless, and so am I.........
Saw rising fish yesterday mid-day...that's a change too.
BWOs, Caddis, Midges, and hoppers seem the big meal offers.
The upper stretch has little water but near Truckee there are some risers to fish, mostly small...sz 20 BWO would be good.
The lower river is at 200+, which is nice.
Winter will be here soon, maybe sooner than we think, get in some more fishing before snow fall......
Let's try to meet...the big guy.
Give me call, we'll raise your game!

Its been far too long since I have meandered up that way.
The river is calling, the dog needs a long walk and Im ready for a change of scenery.
Time to go poke around in the canyon where I have yet to play.
Its always fun exploring a new pull out along a river....new or old.
Its the best time of year up here in the mountains. The quiet time.

Come on up!
Most folks are of the impression that Summer is where it's at..........School breaks, traditional vacation and such.
To me, summer is when you practice......pre-season sort of....
Fall is game time......not a time to work on FUNdamentals.......
Because...........fishing isn't about luck. (Except when you fall down, and you're lucky you didn't break your rod......)

Edit 9-13
A few clouds today.....no rain or snow........
Typical fall weather.
Speculation about weather here is pretty pointless, we will see.......

Twice every year Spring/Fall I nominate a perfect day......there were several this
Week....get busy.

Can you feel the change?
Raining lightly now....
Cloudy and fishy....
Last evenings BWO hatch was stupendous!
Starting to see Geese going south....
Flows are lower, sadly.
132 cfs down low, and clear......
Read as spooky clear....
Water is 62....
A little breezy....
I suggest if you like fishing, to start watching the weather, and launch when these fall "storms" slide through.....
Clouds parted to show a trace of snow up high. It will melt tomorrow...
Not enough precipitation to change the flows or color.....but the fish are changing.

Edit..will be really nice for a while....
Early and late continues to be best,
but not as early or late...
Shady spots have active fish.
Riffles are pumping bugs, but troughs and pools are the focus.....
It's a good time to fish....but don't pound them.
Show them some love.
We are all responsible for the fishery.
It's not puddle fishing yet, but soon the flows might get too low to fish....
Nighttime temps are hovering near freezing, and that is good......

Baetis nymphs or dries,
Midges...
Hoppers...still active.
Weather is as good as it gets.
Mid-week is good.
Look around while you are up......
Life is to short not to......

Sadly, the flows seem a little low for guiding on the T right now.
All the tribs are low as well.
Stillwaters are fishy near inlets especially.
Calibeatis, drysz10, and down wing in the evening. Maybe try a streamer....

I'm moving to Yuba and lower Sac trips.
Of course....when flows are up after first winter storms melt a bit.....l'll wet a line.
Winter can be wonderful on the Truckee River...
The river looked good this year, and will only be better next year.
Had a good season, and enjoyed meeting several forum members too...
I've noticed over near 50 years of meeting fly fishers, that they are very nice in general....
I just avoid two subjects...size and numbers.....;)
Give a call if I can help.

Sorry bout that.....
Got a dusting in town...
Slightly more up high.
Mostly melted on contact and gave the T a little boost.
Just good to see some precip.
Feels like fall, and fishy.

Would bump this up.........but, there is a T report up already............

Very fine conditions right now.
The wind has not robbed us of the fall color yet....
Very warm air temps...40's. A windbreaker is nice.
The river is running again! Not high flows yet.
It went up and back again and flows are clear.

Looks like variable weather, which means, it's Fishing time!
It hasn't frozen yet, so Hoppers will still be out too when it warms up......We may have rare Nov. Hopper fishing!
Oct. Caddis. Sparse...
Smaller Caddis.
4-5 different Mays.
Some small winter stones have shown..
And our fave....Midges.....
It's clearly time to get out......before Winter.
Treat'em nice.......
