Some west coast boys, Ryan Peterson and Justin Miller, are helping out on doing scientific research and collecting data on wild Steelhead in the Kamchatka wilderness.
Not a bad job I'd say!

I love the guy at the beginning talking about that first take of a fly by a Steelhead and how it is unexplainable, you have to experience it to really know. Could of been the accent too!

Justin Miller is the man! I had him as a counselor at the fly shops fishcamp program. His lessons on casting, entomology, and reading the water are a huge reason I stuck with the sport of fly fishing. He's an awesome guy and it's pretty cool to see all the projects he has been apart of over in Kamchatka. A couple years back he was involved in a film project about the epic trout fishing in Kamchatka. If you guys haven't checked out the film "Eastern Rises" it's definitely worth a watch. It will give you chills when you see how desolate the Kamchatka peninsula is.... not to mention the giant trout that inhabit its waters and devour mice like they're mayflies.

My buddy Ted just returned from Kamchatka Russia. The first day he hooked 5 and only landed one female, for the remainder of the trip he sat in his tent and read his Kendal, Cause it never stopped raining and blew out the river. moral of the story, Just cause you pay 12-14 thousand for a trip you can't control the rain, The good side is, he already booked for next year for two spots in a row and they are opening up a new river to fish.

Can't count how many times I've watched this video! I'm ready for winter... @ 6:30 seconds in is all I dream about, that is a hot fish. Only truly had that experience once and lost that battle after a good fight!

When I was a young man working in a bait-n-tackle shop a top local fly fisher, Sacramento Fire Fighter and US Marine, Jack MacGloughlin told me that if I wanted to catch a real Steelhead I should go to the California coast and try to hook a fresh run winter Steelhead that was over 10 pounds and a female too.
In the 1970s I was very lucky to go over to the Gualala River and Garcia River hook some really hot wild Steelhead with veterans like Al Perryman, Walt Bennett and Joe Shirshac.
Steelhead Commando Mike McCune told me that the reason they fish winter Steelhead in Oregon and Washington is because it is the best place to hook large wild Steelhead.
The time for these fish is roughly winter and spring.
Because of the popularity of Spey casting we have many more anglers chasing Steelhead almost year round now.
