I have fished the Fernie area 3 times and skii3ed Fernie Ski Mountain twice. If it had an airport, it would be as popular as Whistler (Cranbrook is 1 hr drive and it is 2+ hours from Kalispell, MT). Elk River is world-class, but sometimes is like the Lower Sacto when you are always in sight of at least one other boat all day long. But mid-week is not so crowded. Other waters are uncrowded.

My favorite is Wigwam River, the prettiest river I have ever fished- Bull Trout City!. It closes Sept 1. Long day fog hiking and wading, but never seems crowded.

BC Fisheries has managed the Elk River well; catch & release, single barbless hook plus the local guides and businesses really understand the value of the C & R program. Westside Cutties are usually like fat people at a free buffet, not too picky.

Lots of "creeks" that have great fishing (rivers by California standards) and lots and lots of friendly people in Fernie.

BTW- Good to see the young females on the water. I grew up in Boise and it was not uncommon for girls to fish- but not something they admitted on the first few dates...

I could watch this video every day...for obvious reasons.

Fernie sucks though, who in their right mind would want to go there? :D LOL
