I just heard Moana passed away. I don't know the details, but I will miss him. The best guide I have had the pleasure of fishing with. I will fish a Moana special in his honor today. Mems.

That's sad news. I never had a chance to fish with him but his influence on guiding and flies used at Christmas Island will long outlast his passing. RIP....

There is no way you can explain the experience of fishing with Moana. So gentle, so understated, so knowledgeable. He was funny and insightful and full of surprises. He acted like he knew all of the fish and their behaviors personally. He was simply the first guide and the best guide. If you had the pleasure of meeting him, then you had the pleasure of having your view of fishing changed forever. Moana was the man, Mems.

Don.....thanks for the great post and picture.

Moana Kofe was always considered the head guide of the island from the very beginning of their fishing program in the 1980s.

We have lost many of our beloved fly fishing guides on Christmas Island over the past 3 decades.

Bob Nauheim and Frank Bertaina of Fishing International travel service in Santa Rosa, CA and Frontier Travel in Wexford, PA both worked hard at pioneering the fishing at Christmas Island.

I was very lucky to get to go there 13 times with many of my best friends.

It is a magical place......

It is still a destination that should be on everyone's Bucket List.
