This is legendary Nor Cal fly fishing guide Fred Gordon wading the new Pit River.

Fred fishes the river for the CA D F & W for stream surveys catching about 70 fish per day.

He says it appears deeper because the bottom is dark and the water has suspended matter.

Fred says just get out in it and it is OK.

At 71 I no longer can fish that great river at the new higher flows.

We fished it in Sept/Oct every fall usually wet wading and swimming some.

I am not complaining because I fly fished that river for about 50 years with my brother and some of my dearest friends.

You young studs can fish it though.....

Yes, but note that Fred is not wearing waders. He usually wears a pair of light neoprene wet suit type pants and his wading shoes.
He wears Simms Riprap Shoes so they are light and he can swim with them if necessary.
Finally keep in mind that Fred is a wader par excellence. :-)
And yep he does catch 70+ fish in a day on the Pit. I have seen him do it.

the fist couple of times I fished the Pit I had maybe 2 fish each time and I wondered what all the fuss was about. Then I fished it with someone who knew what he was doing and lightbulbs went off in my head. There are no rocks or snags in the Pit, they are all fish. Set your hook on every drift and you'll catch a lot of fish.
