I have been building a lot light rods for the back country in 3 wt. I can build you one on a vintage San Francisco Scott G series blank in carbon in 2pc . less than 8 ft. they are sweet rods.

Fly Swatter- I'm going to pass for now. I have a 7ft 3wt butter stick that I enjoy.

For dry fly fishing mostly I like 7'6" to 8' in a true 3 weight.

Many 3 weights can actually have a stiffer tip and be a true 4 weight for short casting on small water.

Some times you have to get a 2 weigh to end up with a 3 weight that will load up in short.

For those who nymph fish on small water I think that 8'6" or 9' (if you can find one) works best for line control.

I guess that you want a shorter front taper like found on a double taper line.


My finest day of small stream dry fly fishing was a few years ago with David Armocido and Fred Gordon on Stoney Creek in Northern California. It was on fire and we hooks tons of small wild fish.

I have several Redington classic trout series rods of these lengths and weight and love them! For $150 they cant be beat.
