They are probably releasing more water to keep back the "SALT WATER INTRUSION".
If the total water flow in the combined Sacramento drainage is not enough to keep the ocean from coming into the Delta then they have to release more water from where ever they can get it.
We need what would be called "minimum pool" in our reservoirs so the water guys can't drain us down to nothing again.
They would not be able to pump salt water to Southern Cal.

Doubt they need to increase the Sac, Feather, Yuba, and AR as much as they are for ONLY this intrusion issue. One would think that the reduced flows last week were sufficient to prevent intrusion, so why so much more needed suddenly?
Water exports due to pumping have almost doubled just since June 1. We'll see what they are in a week when this deluge gets to the delta.

Comment: Delta requirements and export

The "Delta requirements" part (stated FIRST of course...) is a guise to get you to think they actually give a shit about the delta...
and the appendage that follows (almost as an afterthought....) is the REAL reason... "EXPORT".
which seems like a perfect opportunity to RE-post here... what I posted earlier today on the CONSERVATION forum:
An opportunity FOR US to save OUR DELTA by supporting its most active proponent
I am selective about where I spend my donation dollars and I'm sure you are too...
My short list:
American River Parkway Foundation
Effie Yeaw Nature Center
Golden Gate Salmon Association
Waterforfish.org
Restorethedelta
All of the above organizations do a whole lot with very little resources to ensure that what I love most (nature, fishing, healthy waterways) will continue to exist NOW and in perpetuity and for future generations.
How can I not support them?
Restore the Delta was the premier entity opposing the delta twin tunnels and "The Delta Plan" which was recently rejected in court by Judge Michael Kenny.

I hope you will join me in supporting this keystone entity which is so crucial in fighting the fight we all hope to win~

Restore the Delta is the only Delta public interest organization that will be representing all the beneficial uses of water with the State Water Resources Control Board to stop the tunnels permitting process this year.
That means that with our membership partners we are representing the water needs of everyone in the Bay-Delta region: from growers to farm workers; from urban businesses to in-Delta businesses; from Delta drinking water users to lovers of the San Francisco Bay; from boaters to recreational fishermen; from wealthy landowners to members of the environmental justice community; from Sandhill cranes to Delta smelt. We believe that our case, the statistical and narrative facts of the millions of people tied to the estuary, in addition to necessity for species protections, will be the most compelling factual stories made to the State Water Resources Control Board to stop the Delta Tunnels.
It is not Restore the Delta's intention to grow the organization permanently in a manner in which we are always looking for extra funding from our supporters. However, we need additional funding and consistent contributions over the next two years so that staff can stay focused fully on the battle at hand. We need to keep construction from happening. If every one of our members donated $25.00, we would be financially sound until his term finishes.
We appreciate your past help and generosity. Whatever you can give during this period of ramping up for the fight, we appreciate greatly.

Thank you for your support!
Yours in service,
Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, Executive Director

Come on. There has to be a time we all just say "they are full of crap"
Look at the flows off the Feather.
They are watering the crops people.

Imagine how much salt would have crept up all these years had we not regulated the flows. We would all be in trouble, and yes it is all B.S. Agriculture brings in the money.
