Baja Fly Fisher

My friend from Fresno Garth Hirata was here last week and we fished a week together. This was his first time salt water fly fishing, anywhere. Although it has been real slow for catching on the fly, we have gone to the dark side for some catching. I would say it's on fire right now. We were out at the Bajo last week and Garth had hooked up on a fish and as he was bringing it in, we saw what looked like a wahoo charging a mackerel we had drifting out there. I made a cast with the pink marlin fly with the Cam Sigler popper head.
BAM! it hit fast and was taking off. It was off faster than we head the fly. Cut 100lb Mono. Captain said a wahoo. Damn, I was that close to a wahoo on the fly. Garth was still fishing his fish, which we thought was a wahoo, just by the way it took off. I rigged up again with 100lb floro. Trying to tie a slim beauty knot where you're shaking and in the midst of a bite, is almost next too impossible. Once I got it tied on and another pink marlin fly I chucked it out the and let it set. By this time, Garth almost had his fish to the boat. Just then my line went scream'n and burnt the crap out of my finger. Have you ever tried stopping a heavy fish by using your index finger and the cork. I got a nice white line burn in the first joint on my left hand. I actually thought I saw smoke. A pilot shark grabbed the fly off the surface and took off. But as soon as the line had hit the spool enough drag was on the reel and the shark bit the line clean. During the week, Garth hooked into a decent size rooster, jack, another shark and a marlin on the beach by the houses. Then we haaded to Ranchito where he caught a dorado on a fly using no bait. Just slapping the water and using the hookless teaser. Then he hooked into another one. One his last day, I think hd had a rooster and then the fight of his life. He hooked into a marlin while trolling a live mackerel. He fought the fish for a hour and a half before it came unbuttoned at the boat, 25' away from his biggest fish of his life. He really enjoyed the week.
In the weeks I've been down here, we've run into a lot of wahoo, marlin, big roosters, jacks and huge sharks. Bill Lum fought a shark for a while only to bring it to the boat and have the rod break. Hand lined it in and estimated 200lbs. cut the leader and let it swim away.. We also go checked for fishing licenses. Fist time in many years

I have finally decided to retire after 25+ years in Baja. So after the 2017 Baja Fishing Season I'm leaving the Baja. Kinda sad but it's time. But the past 3 years have been pretty dismal in regards to the bait and a lot of people here in the Baja think it won't improve. I've had a number of memorable years in BCS.
I will be hosting trips to Christmas Island, New Zealand (salt water fly fishing) and in the future to Cook Island (possibly) I should be able to get a lot of time on the water for some carp fishing

A big White Bonito
