Been over to the EW a few times the last month. Some notes.

First, any freestone style stream this year is going to be blown out until at least late June if not early July. East Carson is running anywhere from 1400-2000 CFS. Great for white water rafting but not fishing. I saw 3 boats put in at Carson River Resort on the way over Monitor Pass. West Walker is a nestle chocolate raging bull at close to 1000. West Carson might be a little more fishable sooner like in the meadow area. But this isn't like the last 3+ years. Think later this year and hit some lakes or tailwaters. I think the high elevation stuff will be 4th of July and on. Still a ton of snow up higher and we have more wet weather next week. Be careful if you have kids and are camping at these places. I have a bad feeling that we could read about a drowning this year. Do not take this runoff period lightly.

East Walker is the best I've seen it in years in terms of flows. 200+ CFS right now. Fishing has been decent if you work for fish. A lot of big browns survived . Most fish have been 16-20 inches i've caught. I haven't had double digit days but I keep coming back so I'm happy with the few big fish I get into each trip. I've fished both the Scierene Ranch and Rosachi area mainly. I don't do the miracle mile. Too many people although this year it hasn't been that crowded. Only counted about 5 trucks between 182 bridge and toilet bowl.

I haven't had any luck on streamers but I did have some success a few weeks ago on a big stone fly dry and midge dropper. Fish were keying on top but lately its all about worms down and dirty. Fish are spreading out more. The water temps are higher in the east walker so fish are much more active right now compared to other streams. Last I checked was about 57 mid day.

Good luck and have fun.

No problem Dave. There has been a lot of chatter about folks looking for water to fish around memorial day weekend and I would hate for somebody to drive somewhere only to be disappointed. Really important to watch flows and water temps this time of the year.

Thanks for posting that, Dave! Have you made it out to the Owens by chance?

Got invited to Tahoe Wednesday and to fish the East Walker on Thursday. Here is my game plan: At least one fish over 22 inches. Tahoe: One jackpot, over $22,000. A few beers, maybe split a good bottle of wine, a couple of cigars. Not asking for much. Simple pleasures.

Good one John. Not sure abbot the Jackpot but a EW nice brown, some beers, wine, and cigars are definitely achievable. Have fun and let us know how you do. Either way its fishing and not work right.

Way to aim high!
It's been busy up here in Tahoe. Where did the shoulder season go?
The fishing is so far and few between....gotta get in the car and drive.
But we needed the snow and rain. So keep it coming. We may have some weather towards the weekend.
The lakes and reservoirs are filling up quick if not already full. Most of the high elevation lakes are still iced up too.
But why sit on the couch...?
Good luck out there John! Go catch a 25"er!

Well, I did well with the beer, wine and cigars. Never made it to the casino. Poor fishing, which I'll attribute mostly to my lack of great nymphing skill, but the giant windstorm didn't help. We did see a couple guys from Lodi that my friend knew - one of them had just landed a 21-incher. I purposely didn't try for that fish because it was below my 22-inch goal.
