I am in the market for a carry-all for airline travel with my rods, reels, boxes, etc. I have a few major trips coming up, where I need to be able to bring at least 3-4 rods and reels plus an array of spools, tippet, and fly boxes.

The tough part is that I need a case big enough for my 4 piece 11' switch rod. I was thinking about the Orvis Safe Passage large size, which is supposed to be able to handle switch rods:

But, I would welcome feedback to the affirmative or contrary. I need to order something in the next 2 weeks as my first trip is 5/24.

I have the Allen gear bag, very similar to the Orvis. I think I paid $115.00 +or- for it. Not sure about the Spey rod fitting, but a great travel case. Worth a look.

Closing the loop here.

I ended up ordering this bag:

I will probably still get a carry on style case for shorter trips in the future, but for my 2 week upcoming NZ marathon, I really need to bring a lot of stuff, including 2 pairs of waders and boots, several layers of warm clothes, a fair number of rods and reels. This bag looks like it will fit the bill nicely.

I will update after my trip with how it went and a recommendation of yes or no for others on this bag.

I have not left on my trip yet (Saturday) but I have mostly finished packing this bag and I am really, really impressed.

The top compartment is absolutely cavernous. I have in there: rain jacket, soft shell, mid weight fleece, pair of regular breathable pagagonia waders, first aid kit, various other sundries, plus my Umpqua 500 ledges pack jammed full of fly boxes and a pair of korkers wading boots.

On the bottom, I have 3 rods in their tubes, 4 reels, a pair of neoprene waders, and various other odds and ends (versileaders, flashlights/headlamps, more clothes, etc).

Fully packed this way I think it will come in around 40 pounds and leaves my entire other suitcase for clothes and other items. If I had to pack a few more small items into the bag, I could easily do so.

so far, 5 stars, let's see how it stands up to air travel...
