They are probably eating small Steelhead, small salmon and other small fish plus crawdads and eels.

Mark Kranhold was swinging for spring run Steelhead with a sculpin pattern and hooks this powerful Striper.

He said it was quite a battle in the strong currents.

Pretty soon we will have small Steelhead, Stripers and American Shad in the Lower American River.

Flow is 3,000 cfs which is good.....

I bet there've been stripers in the American for a while as it was quite green when the Sac was blown out over a month ago. As the rivers have come up, so has everything else. There are stripers all the way past Butte City to Chico for several weeks. One of the real hot-spots is the Chico Straits area.

Interesting, some of the fish are real fresh and spilling milt, while others have already spawned. What's really surprising is the numbers of fish still in the delta. And the guides down that way are saying the same thing about having both new fish coming in and at the same time spawned fish dropping down. Once that water gets into the low 60's degrees they'll be spawning everywhere.

Then, most of the fish drop down and head back to the bay and the ocean for the summer. But, there are still good numbers of "bigger" fish that hang around and enjoy the easy meals of shad that are just getting here. And that'll go through June and July. August seems to drop off a little, but, September has been one of our best months for big fish.

Yep, it's time to get out there wherever you are,,,, the American, the Sac, the Feather, the Delta, probably even the bay too.
