I'm heading up to this area tomorrow. I've been to Rucker a couple of times, never been to Rollins. If anyone wants to try to meet, that would be great. I'll have my kayak, and my wife prefers that I don't go alone.

I hope you went to Rollins. The bite is crazy hot right now.

Where did you go? How did you do?

I went, I didn't really know where to go. I ended up launching the kayak at one of the campgrounds, 8.00 fee. I didn't get too far into the lake, but I caught six or seven spots and one Smallie.

I just got the story and pictures up on my blog. Take a look and let me know if they're all spots or if any are largemouth.

Nice....I think a fishing kayak is a great way to go today.

Probably many mid-elevation reservoirs in California are good for bass right now.

*What line and fly do most of your "reservoir dogs" use?

Tom....glad you picked Rollins....one of them is a spotted, and the other could be a large mouth.....the spotted bass will have a smaller mouth with a longer head and body.

Bill.....a intermediate line would be a good choice to start the day with.....my fly of choice is my 5 color UV marabou streamer.

I just started learning about fishing for spotted bass in our deep canyon reservoir like Rollins, and Bullards Bar where the shore line is over 40 ft deep or more within 10 ft of the shore.
As the sun gets higher in the sky and the water temp goes up, the spotted's will sink down into deeper water right next to shore so a sinking line is a must to have to stay in contact with the spotted's.
Deep water indicator fishing with a balance fly can be a good choice, i been doing some research in vertical fly fishing with my streamer.
Wind and wave's will push the water along the edge of the rocky shore, look for current seams to fish.
Here's a web site to tell the different types of bass.

Looks like a fun trip.

A spotted bass's jaw will go up to, but not past it's eyeball. There are a couple other clues, but that's the easiest one to see. The fish you caught look like spots, but the second fish is hard to see.

Awesome. That looks really lightweight, does it take forever to sink?

Tom....the fly has no weight add but because the body is tied thin, and the hook TMC 2499SPBL size 8 or 6 adds enough weight to make the fly sink the same speed as the fly line.
When you strip this fly it doesn't bob up and down, it darts forward and slows down, darts forward and slows down just like a bait fish.
I tied this fly for Rollins last year it's a 5 color marabou UV Translucent streamer for the very clear water that Rollins and Bullards Bar will shortly have.

Really sparse streamers can be very effective.

Bass should be getting up very shallow now....
