View Full Version : Poledancin Airheads...

Got a chance to do some early spring fishing before the recent storms moved in. Had some good success fishing shallow areas off of breaks, islands, etc.
The good old jumbo poledancer is still teasing up a few fish from smaller schoolies to double-digit caliber stripers:

Then there was one morning when the fish were blasting my buddy Ben's topwater plug but wouldn't fully commit to the poledancers. On a hunch, I pulled the jumbo airhead that I've had in the flybox for months. Fished in on an intermediate line and started probing the shallows. In 1-ft deep water, this fish slashed at the fly but missed; leaving a huge upwelling of water as it turned around and just engulfed the airhead on the second try. Holy smokes:

The fly has great action. It just suspends on the water and with the right cadence it will walk the dog just below the surface. And if you give it a really hard yank with an immediate pause, the fly darts and does a 180. Pretty cool.
One added benefit is that it weeds out the smaller sub-legal fish. I can feel them eat it but never get hooked.
The schoolies liked them some airheads too:

Or it could just be the new lucky hat: :D

Pretty stoked to add a new effective fly for shallow water applications.

Stopped by Kiene's and stocked up:

Will be ready once the water clears up.....

Thanks Bill. Lenny and his crew at Bucks are top notch. They did an excellent job on a major warranty repair on my motor a couple years ago. Got me back on the water quick and I've taken my boat there for service several times.
