Aloha, got his Mini Marlin yesterday while fishing offshore out of Hilo. We weren't sure what it really was, because the bill was very short and the dorsal fin went so far along the back. It looked like it might have been a big spear fish. We took it to Tokunagas to get it weighed because the state record for spear fish is 76 lbs. The fish weighed 71lbs and people were still not sure what it is. We cut it open and it had white meat, so it was a small blue marlin. It would have been a great catch on the fly, too bad it hit the lures. I would have let it go and asked my friends what they wanted to do. They said keep um so we did. Really cute little guy.
We stopped and did some bottom fishing and picked up a half dozen opakapaka so some nice dinner tonight. The water was really flat, and some big ahi have been coming up, so that is what we were after.

That's a perfect size for the fly rod Don. I've had smoked A'u in Hilo years ago and it was great. Kind of teryaki'd and sweet, and I've seen it in small packages like jerky in the stores too.

Whatever you do, enjoy it.

Yep, CI is coming up quick. Can't hardly wait. Tony

Aloha Don,.... Interesting catch. Never have seen one that small. Too bad it wasn't a Spearfish. I've had some smoked Marlin before and that's a great way to eat it. Anyway, hope you enjoy your dinner. Keep up the reports.

Hey Darian, I got a spear fish on the fly about 12 years ago. It was big about 60lbs and my friend let me release it. I have caught stripped marlin on the fly, and they are a blast. I haven't gotten a blue yet, and don't want one over 150lbs. My back is already screwed up from big ahi. I really want to get a sail fish, and will spend some time in Christmas Island chasing them, of course afetr I get my fill of bones and GT's. Spear fish are very cool creatures. I just knew this fish was a baby marlin. Good luck when you go with Jay. The opakapaka was delicious, never met a snapper I didn't like, Don
