Mark,

As I know little or nothing about spey / switch stuff, what is the difference about a "spey" reel compared to a regular fly reel? Are these simply large size clicker reels made to look like vintage reels, or, is there a real purpose to their design and function?

No sarcasm intended, I've just never gotten into this and know nothing about it. I understand the mechanics of double hand roll casting but that's about it.

Hey Tony, the modern reels will work as well. The modern reels are very light and with the longer rods like Spey rods in the 12-14 foot range a heavier reel balances out the rod better throughout your casting stroke and defiantly while holding your rod throughout the swing, not fun to be fighting a tip heavy rod all day. I know of a lot of people that fish a modern type reel with some leadcore wrapped on the arbor before the backing to add some extra weight, capacity comes into play to with the long lines and the fat skagit heads. The Speyco does have the old school look with the modern materials but built heavier to balance out the long rods.
