Recent rain pushed a lot of salmon up the system, and the trout are keying in on eggs and baetis. Fished from 2pm until sunset, was an absolutely beautiful evening. Got maybe the biggest trout I've ever hooked into on the Lower Y right to the net...and the net wasn't big enough :/ Fumbling with him to angle him in and he shook free, but still managed to get a few to hand. Gotta be cautious walking around the redds, but plenty of solid fish waiting just after them to eat.

We fished the same day but earlier and got chased off the water by a big old T-storm! Small hail and some serious cloud to ground lightning.

I was watching the weather report and timed it to get there as it was clearing. Definitely saw some crazy lighting over Butte county as we came through Lincoln, but by the time we got there it was bluebird. That rain definitely shakes things up and gets fish moving. How was it that am?

The last shot in the first set of photos is great! A big upside down U in the rod! You were lucky to catch any fish in that run on Sunday about noon there were about 4 or 5 other people fishing that run. I think the sideways rain and lightning scared them off. Right after the rain the fishing picked up considerably. Remember color of the "fly" is very important during the egg bite…

We are so lucky to have the Lower Yuba River wild Rainbow trout fishery with good regulations on it too.

That run is my go to first check. If it's crowded I'll wait it out usually, or jump upriver to the spot with all the log stacks until it clears. I actually hooked into that one right above the top riffle and it ran me downstream through the fast water into the first few yards of my backing before I was able to get him into the slack water. I've actually picked up more fish in that run well below the main bend, sort of across from where the road got washed out.

Yes that run is great!! There are fish from the inside corner all the way down around the corner… Try some small s and m s on 5x if it has been hit. Fishing the Yuba is fun you can fish big flies on 2x down to dry flies on 5x. Get after it.

We were up yesterday, and after several successful days in that slot, I think that the fish are beginning out move out or catch on. Personally, I think that run has fished best of any spot on the river up to now. The tiny size of the salmon run this year has been shocking to say the least. Yesterday, the Yuba had that empty, vacant feel to it, where you had to work your tail off to scratch out 4-5 fish in 7 hours. The off switch was definitely turned on for us after the early morning Thankfully, one of them was the largest fish I have landed on the Yuba in several months, a nice egg-bite beefy 20" fish with big shoulders.

Got out both days this weekend.

Saturday: Started fishing around 130pm, immediately nailed 2 behind the redds...one ate an egg, the other a BH hare's ear. Then caught a couple of more in a different spot on a copper john. Biggest fish was about 17-18".

Sunday: Nothing doing at all. Tried eggs, a few different nymphs, and even did some swinging...not even a bite. Salmon numbers noticeably down relative to the past few times I have been out there (and of course that is not saying much since there were so few to begin with).

Next trip out there will likely not be until December 5 so hopefully by then the transition off the egg is mostly done and the fish settle into their more normal winter feeding patterns.

Glad it wasn't just me. Fished hard on Sunday at/around the bridge. Nothin' doing.

Looking forward to getting out in December and exploring the water above the bridge.

Got back out today with the lady for a bit. Feels like it's slowed down some, but we also got on the water on the heels of a few guides so guessing they'd seen some flies already. Looked like all of them were getting clients on fish tho, so they're still eating...maybe just deeper into the middle of the runs. Took this guy on an egg, but had a few hits on a tungsten bwo nymph also.

Nice work, Gregg! Watched while you landed one from the road as I was leaving. I fished down river at Long Bar for a couple hours and had only one grab on a Baetis nymph.

Was that you in the silver truck? This was probably the fish! Did you see many salmon down there? Seem to be fewer moving around from what I could tell.

Salmon were in numbers 3 weeks ago. Theyre all but fertilizer around this time. Try swinging bright colors. You'd be surprised.

Yes, that was me. In fact, my plan "A" was to fish the same spot, but I drove by while you guys were gearing up!

I saw only a handful of salmon downstream. Not many, just one small group in the side channel.

My brother and I got out on Tuesday. The morning was pretty nasty with the storm that passed through. We spent the first couple hours we were there hunkered down waiting out the down pour. The storm finally passed around noon and once it did, the bite was on. For about an hour or so we were getting takes on every 4-5 casts. Fish were lovin the olive S&Ms and FB PT's. Had a nice run in with a 19" rainbow that fought me like a 30". After the first hour or so the bite really slowed. I was expecting a BWO hatch to come off at some point in the late afternoon with the overcast weather but it never came. Still some salmon in the system but definitely not as many as a couple weeks ago. Had no takes on the eggs.

Egg bite still going. Got 5 today from 8:30 to noonish, 4 of which came on the egg behind active redds. The other fish grabbed a rubber legs. Fished to some finicky risers for awhile but nothing doing even on 6x with every bwo pattern I had in the box, plus midges.

Great to meet up today Gregg. Since you had the hot hand I'll let you write up the report, just don't divulge my spots! :p

That spot will go to the grave with me haha. That might be the best and most consistent / solid fishing I've done in a long time. Something like 10-12 fish to hand, all from 16-20" and strong, 4 of them coming back to back to back to back...4 casts, 4 fish (3 to the net, one of them pretty much laughed at my #5 and took off after a couple jumps), all in the same pocket.

PV still took the day with a solid slab in a piece of water you wouldn't expect to find a fish like that.

I was the guy in the toon that stopped Monday. He was on fire!! That is a great run I have fished for years.
