Interesting, didn't know Berkeley had produced a clone to the Hardy LRH. They look identical. How do you distinguish the clone from the original?

You can easily tell the difference in hand. The clone reels have a cheaper shiny metal for the latch cover and they are made of some sort of painted metal vs the machined aluminum of the Hardy version. The Berkley 540, Heddon 310, and the Wright and McGill Eagle Claw EC-11 are all clones of the Hardy LRH.

Hi Rich

An old friend of mine just showed be one of those Heddon, made in Japan?, knock offs of the Hardy LRH fly reel.

His father bought it and it is new in the box....

I remember in around the 1970s they were produced and pretty good reels and cheap.

Yep - Most of these Hardy clones (they cloned the Featherweight, LRH, and Princess and I think there are even a few St Aidan clones out there) were assembled here in the US but the parts were made in Japan. A company called Olympic did most of the parts I believe. They are indeed pretty good little reels. They used to be available dirt cheap but they are becoming "vintage" and cool now so prices have come up a bit. On the advice of a friend, I switched the original pawls out on mine (I have several Heddon and Eagle Claw versions) for Hardy pawls (also found in the Orivs CFO reels) and they do improve the function a bit.

My pleasure. Price drop on the remaining Berkley spool and the LRH spool.
