Still haven't managed to hook a steelhead on the AR yet... Seems I'm just the Squawfish Slayer as of late. When he hit and I set the hook, I thought to myself: "It finally happened!!"... The fight was fun but as soon as I got him into the shallows where I could land him, I realized he wasn't a steelie. Oh well, at least it kept the Skunk away. Hooked him on a Kranhold Sculpin. Mark sure knows how to tie up some great flies for squaws.

Lol! I thought the new reel would of turned that combo into a steel stick? You are the true Squaw whisperer... I hear they taste like chicken!

Caught a 10 pounder last year during the shad run. The initial take was hard but after that it was like pulling in a shoe!

Fisher hooked a big boy on the Pit this year...initially he thought it was a brown. Probably 24" +

A real buzzkill when you think you have a LUNKER on!

Actually, Eric......it was a sucker I got on the Pit, not a squawfish. So do not group me in with these "fishermen" who can only catch squawfish. :) Suckers are a much more prized species than squawfish. :p

You've been fishing with Mark too much. I don't think he grabbed a skater.

Many year ago I saw a Squawfish on the South Fork of the American River below Chili Bar that looked like it would go 20#s.

When the lower American River was very low, warm and full of weeds in the drought of the late 1970s we got lots of Squawfish that swam up from the Sacramento River?

On a serious note, is there anything we can do to keep these fish out of the river? It's my understanding that they don't do much for the ecosystem other than displace trout... Maybe we can do like DFG required for Pike back when they ended up here: Cut the head off, toss it in the bushes and report to DFG.

Was at the feather this past weekend. My buddy and I thought we saw a pod of fresh salmon. Got closer and they were huge squaw fish. Double digits easily.

Yellow steelhead!
At least to me the bigger they get the uglier they look. I wouldn't mind hooking into a 10#+ pike minnow though!
