Our annual horse pack trip, into the Emigrant Wilderness, was fantastic this year. We started out at Kennedy Meadows, and with mules horses, and climbed up and over Mosquito Pass before dropping down to Emigrant Lake, at 9,000ft.

The 15 mile journey was a bit rough on these old bones, but when we arrived at our camp, all the aches and pains vanished.

The weather was unsettled for most of the week, but we still managed good numbers (10 to 20) of rainbows between 16" and 20"; as well as big fat brookies that averaged around 14".
At 9,000 ft., native trout of this size are amazing!

We used a variety of nymphs and streamer patterns, and they are seemed to catch fish. This year we saw good numbers of caddis, not seen before, and with 2 calm evenings, for the 6 days, we were able to experience excellent dry fly action on slate and brown caddis immitations.

This year we packed up our float tubes and hiked down the lake to try some of the deeper areas, strewn with huge boulders. Big baitfish streamers were the most effective, fished on Int., Type 3, and 150 gr. sinktip lines. The Alaska Special, cut down a bit for these trout (2 1/2") was especially effective.

We even had a couple of afternoons when we fished big brown or green hoppers, floated over deep boulders. The explosive strikes were heart stopping!

How many people usually go on your annual trip Lee?

August is a great month for a pack trip into the cooler high country.
