View Full Version : Quick Work Trip To HI, Hilo
Hey folks,
I'll be heading out to Hawaii for a few days for work I'll be staying around Hilo and was wondering if any one could give a guy some advise for what to bring, what to expect and where I might go. Quick and dirty. I figure I'll bring what I got and see what I can get.

Aloha Justin, I live in Hilo. I would not bring a sinking line, only floating. 10 foot rod is kind long, 9 would be better. Right now the oama, baby goatfish are in the bay. There are tons of trevally. Yellow/white size 02 clouser will work well. Strip fast and if you get a follow, strip faster. You can fish the break wall, if the waves aren't too big. Richardson's and the keaukaha beaches have papio, small trevally. Liliuokalani gardens pond has bonefish, trevally, cuda, ladyfish, etc and is very easy to fish. I got a nice 6lb bone there on Saturday. Try small crab or small tan, brown shrimp pattern. Wailoa has 30lb milkfish swimming around. Make sure you say your prayers if you go after them.
Offshore E buoy is loaded with small ahi and aku and some large predators like big ahi and marlin. You would want a 12wt. Good luck, Mems.
Thanks mems,
I'll be fishing a 10' Sage XP 8wt. any line / wt. recommendations to match this rod up with? I've got shotting heads cause thats what I fish here on the SF peninsula. mems, if you wanta show a mainlander around let me know. Im headed out to help with the Umauma stream bridge. I might have a rio tropical line floating around I've never used.
Thanks,
Justin Ice
I would bring the floating line. Sinking lines get stuck in the rocks. Email me at kickithilo@yahoo.com and we can set up an afternoon to fish. Let me know the dates. Don
