An article in the SacBee, 1/15/15, reflects info from recent surveys by CA DFW for fish netted at 31 different sites. Five species are listed, American/Threadfin Shad, Delta/Longfin Smelt and young Striped Bass. No mention of Salmon/Steelhead but that may be due to the timing of the surveys. In any event, the numbers for every specie surveyed is bleak. Check out the link:

In a follow up article on 1/20/15, the Bee sub heading to the title of the article reads, "STATE FOCUSES ON SAVING FIVE KEY SPECIES IN DELTA." The same species of fish are included as in the article of 1/15/15. Given the past record of neglect towards towards Shad/Stripers on the part of CA DFW, I'm finding the idea that they are suddenly considered a key delta species by that department difficult to accept. Well, lets see where this leads us....

I think DFW has a focus on "saving" native fish, especially those listed on the ESA, other species can still be indicators of watershed health though.

Probably the writer at the Bee or an editor mixed up some terminology in the second article?
