Yesterday I used my Super Cat float tube on the Yuba to float from Highway 20 to Sycamore.. It was my first test of the boat in somewhat tricky water. There were times when I needed to do some serious work with the oars to navigate and I didn’t really have a place for even one rod while doing so. It would be nice also to have two rods rigged to have the option of both nymphing and trying some dries if that opportunity presented itself.

So, I started doing some research looking at rod holders for float tubes/pontoon boats and it seems the Scotty 267 Fly rod holder w/266 float tube mount would be a good choice. Seems I could put one on each of my two pontoons which would give me that option of two rods I am looking for. Does anyone have experience using this with their float tube or have recommendations on others to consider? As always thanks for your input and recommendations.

Hey Bill,
I saw nice set up at the Sac ISE show but I can't locate the info. Its an aluminum frame that comes with two rod holders that mounts to the d-rings or straps to pontoons. Optional fishing buddy mount. I almost bought one and now I can't find the paper work. He may be at the Pleasant on show.
Perhaps someone here also saw it at the show.

Bill, the set up Jet posted looks like the cat's meow to me. I think I'll get a couple of those for my pontoon boats. And, thanks Jet for posting that.

Bill and I have the same boat. Wondered whether this rod holder set up would interfere or get in the way of the oars. Thoughts?

Betty, That is a good question. I took my super cat out on the lawn and sat in it and tried to approximate my normal stroke for using the oars and It appears I I have room for this strapped at the far back side of the pontoons behind me to not interfere with rowing. The frame for the rod/accessory holder is actually 33 inches long and fortunately the rod holders can be adjusted along the length as it appears they both need to be near the back half of it to be completely out of the way when rowing. When putting the oars in the rest position behind me there will be some maneuvering to slide the oar in the oar lock to allow it to be placed on the other side of the rods and holders. Anyway I think it will all work and I will be happy to let you know for sure as I plan on getting it. Here is a picture of it on a conventional float tube.

I just picked up my new toon this weekend and am looking for a rod holder as well. Found a few you can build using PVC pipe on You Tube for a fraction of what the manufactured ones cost.

A now deceased member of this forum, SHigSpeed, designed and built a nice rod holder with PVC pipes. He had many photos in his posts that will useful for someone to DIY. I suggest using the search function to locate them.

Bill,

Thanks for the picture with the attachment. If you are familiar with the Water Master raft, do you think this unit would work? Thanks

Here is a picture of the original CastMate on a pontoon boat. The V2.0 works the same way. Final placement will depend on your preference and oar locks.

Any chance that will be at Thursday's GBFC meeting?
I saw this rack at ISE show and he mentioned a savings if we bought as a group.
I'm in.

Hey Boon - Here's one I build for my toon. It's not difficult to do and works well enough for me. -Bryan

Hey Blueracer, that an awesome rod holder you built. I was going to buy a couple of scotty fly rod holders but I think I'll hold off and attempt to built one like yours.

Thanks for sharing it!
