I will be in Ashland, OR this Friday and Saturday and have a free pass to fish Saturday morning. Is there decent fishing on the Rogue within 45 minutes of Ashland? Any recommendations on location and/or gear would be appreciated. I have a 4 and 6-wt switch rod (10' 10"), plus a one-handed 10' 7-wt.

Thanks.

Paul

You might try sending a pm or e-mail note to Gordon Langenbeck (BB member). He lives up there and should have answers to your questions.

Good luck up there....

There is some good water around Tou Velle Park and boat launch

My daughter goes to school at SOU in Ashland and when I got up to see her and I want to take some time to wet a line, I contact these folks for the current conditions: http://www.ashlandflyshop.com/ Very friendly and professional people and they know their stuff.

Cheers!

Both sides of the river at Tou Velle are good, and your 6wt switch would be a good fit. The fly shop in Ashland is another good recommendation, nice folks there have helped me more than once. There's also a good spot at the bottom end of "hayes falls" (probably misspelled that), which is easy to find if you have the stream time map. A bit further drive and you can get up by the dam where there are a lot of access points and some very easy to fish water (maybe an hour +/- from Ashland). I might be tempted to fish further downstream around Galice myself, just to have a shot at some early winter fish but the water may still be pretty high for a bit longer...
Good luck.

Rogue blown out. At dam about 6,500 cfs and 7,750 cfs at Grants Pass.

Gordon, do you think it will be fishable Saturday morning?

No, because of the continued high releases from Lost Creek Dam.

Bummer.

Anyone have thoughts on the Klamath? Looks like the town of Hornbrook is only 25 minutes from Ashland. I've never fished the Klamath.

Klamath, if in shape, has some nice water in that area. I would go to the rest-stop turnoff (1 south of Hornbrook), turn left, and there is a dirt road following the river. If it looks fishy-HIT IT!
Good luck....

Klamath below Iron Gate looks like it has been dropping 150 CFS per day since Monday when it jumped up from 950 CFS to 1650 CFS. I am not optimistic but I will bring my gear and post a report whatever I end up doing.

I didn't go. The flows weren't encouraging on the Rogue or the Klamath, and I had some family obligations. I am not worthy of the steelhead gods.
