Got rid of the kids this weekend and went to the coast. Great weather, not too crowded. Since I'd ran into some gear guys fishing for perch on Saturday, I figured I'd give it a shot today. I had one perch? follow my clouser, and landed 3 sand crabs. Guess, it's time to break out my bootfoots and buy a stripping basket. First time in the surf was a blast. Anybody getting out there?

Ken Hanley and Jay Murakoshi here are experts on that surf fly fishing.

They use to put on really good Surf Fly Fishing seminars right on some good beaches south of here.

Keith Kaneko took one of those seminars some years ago and said it was wonderful. Keith said that a ton of perch were caught that morning....like 50 to 100?

Maybe Ken and Jay will do another seminar next spring?

Jay and Ken are usually at our Kiene's Annual Expo every year in mid-April.

JTrick,

We do a surf tour each year. Ken Hanley is one of my mentors and has been one of the instructors for the tour in the past. It's a great tour. We are actually re-working the days and the cost. I can keep you up to date on it if you would like.

Here is the link, check it out!!

I retired in 2000 and began to explore the nearby surf several days a week with the fly rod. By myself,
I learned to read the water and the feeding habits of the surf inhabitants. If you want to shorten the
learning time/curve, I suggest something like Lance's tour. Time and money would be well spent.
Best to all,

Fished the Santa Cruz area last weekend and although the surf was big and the beaches were pretty flat, the fishing was decent. Found a couple nice schools of perch that were willing. Nothing big, just hand size but fun nonetheless. Last few trips over the summer was pretty much impossible due to the seaweed. Very clean water now and should start getting better soon. Next summer i need to try and figure out the beach stripers or at least give them a go south of SC.

Chasin,
Regarding the stripers in the surf, see if you can contact Loren Elliott; maybe Google "Loren Elliott fly fishing."
I think he's still on the East Coast. He used to guide for stripers in the surf; mostly the Pt Reyes area.
Very successful at catching them. A Kiene search would also be productive.
Best,
