Last week my wife and some friends rented a house at Dillon Beach. I fished every day in Tomales for halibut, but only caught several sharks for my trouble. One evening we were walking along the beach and it was apparent from the diving birds that there was a large school of baitfish just beyond the surf line. Down the beach I noticed a guy with a lightweight spinning rod with some kind of fish on. There was a lot of seaweed in the water and he was constantly struggling to keep the seaweed off the line. I watched him for about 20 minutes and he finally beached a 42in striper! He told me that he had played it for about one hour. He was using a 1 1/2 inch silver spoon with a #6 treble hook and 10 lb. test line. Amazing. He also said that he had gotten a 15 pounder the night before. The stripers apparently were chasing the baitfish close enough to shore that they would probably have been within fly range as well.
