Great video Jay! What type of setup are throwing ? I love how scrappy the smallies are, great fighting fish!

You need to gather a few Sac guys and jet on up here. Lots a room at my place with this river 30 minutes away. It just reached prime flows last week and I fished it twice. The first thing I noticed is the average size is much bigger than previous years! The fish in the video is a large average but theres lots within a couple inches of this fish. And the numbers are mind numbing! The craziest thing about this place is I infrequently see a couple Amish dunking worms near the bridges. Other than that, its always just me and the river :)

Thanks Mark! I always use a floating line with a twisted leader. I just think the twisties turn over the big flies better. Im using a 6wt but am considering stepping up to the 7. some of these bigger fish are putting a big hurt on the 6 when they jump into current.
I would love to throw poppers all day, and probably will as the season progresses. I did get several VERY nice fish on top this week, but the flies that shine the brightest on this river for the largest smallies, are big EP streamers. In fact, heres the actual fly you see me removing from the fish in the video.

Sometimes it will get ridiculous and matters not what you fish.

Heres an example from last year.

I thought it sounded like Gilmore , but I've never heard him use a pitch-shifter . Old Dogs , eh ?

I'd LOVE to come and visit sometime .... but we're off to Abreojos for 2 weeks starting this Thursday .... so this Summer is off the plate . Carry on with your Fish exercise program !!

Have fun down there David! I know your going to kick all the poor Baja reports to the curb and do something like you did last time! ;)

last evening I made a trip to the river with topwater in mind. It was a little slow, but I did manage some fish and a few nice ones. Really wanted to get some good surface strikes on video, but the bite was too slow.

Here is the fight, land and release of a very nice topwater smallie
