Going up to Island Park, Hebgen lake, Madison next week. Thinking of cramming a float tube in my checked bag.
Couple sites say not to tube Hebgen;too windy and fish spread out.
Any advice? Thanks

I fished up there years ago on cougar and grayling creeks above Hebgen and slayed lrg bows on bunny leach's, just make sure you wear lost of bells and maybe have some bear spray, the rangers stated that's where the heaviest concentration of grizzlies in the eco system are located.(probably why the fishing was so good, no other fisherman)

Yes, Blue Ribbon Fly Shop can sell you the right flies and show you where to launch your float tube. Madison Arm.....

You only need a 5 weight outfit with a floating line, 9' 4x leader and 5x/6x tippet, some Callibaetis and Trico adults for those "Gulpers".

Most just fish the mornings till noon or hen the wind blows.

Just get out in the general area where the fish are rising and wait for them to come near you.

It is usually not numbers but quality.

Ive float tubed Hebgen. Its a fantastic lake with lots of access. Lots of places to get out of the wind. We destroyed big browns and rainbow in several locations on the lake. It was actually right around this time of year.

We camped at the Madison Arm CG and the best fishing was directly across the lake from there. There is a dirt road that will take you to some access with coves around some steep banks. We caught fish right in front of the camp ground too, as well as near the mouth of the South Fork Arm.

If you want a real treat and you have time, jump over to Henrys lake for huge cutties!

Watch yourself on Henry's. not as much cover and winds can get going quickly.
